It would probably be hard to find a fighter who didn't feel confident that he could beat RM. I know some will say that Ali thought that RM could possibly beat him, but that was Ali talking in public. It would be interesting to hear Ali discuss a fight with RM in private, it's doubtful that Ali honestly thought that RM could give him any problems. Larry Holmes made the mistake of telling the truth about what he thought of RM's fighting ability and he was attacked for it then and still is by fans. Doubtful that Holmes is by himself in his assessment of RM, but a lot of fighters have learned a lesson after seeing what happened to Holmes.

Jerry Quarry, especially when he was young, before the drugs and alcohol became a factor would be the best opponent RM ever faced IMO. JQ had his own problems, but he had good movement and good skill. Against RM he wouldn't be giving up size and reach, as he usually did. JQ was capable of a bad performance, he wasn't the most consistent, but from what I've seen, he'd have an excellent chance of beating RM.

I have always like Quarry and respected Quarry .. brave as all hell , tons of heart, had some decent skills and fought some memorable bouts in the 60's and 70's but every time I hear him referred to as the best to never win a title I cringe because I don't believe it .. put aside how he was clearly outclassed by Ali and Frazier because most everyone was .. Jerry excelled against bigger, slower, very strong but limited punchers like Foster and Lyle .. he also had a career highlight win against an inexperienced Shavers catching Earnie early .. that said, to say he gives Rocky all he can handle is to me inaccurate ... Marciano was likely stronger, much better conditioned, a much better two handed hitter and better defensively as well .. I see it like the first Frazier fight where Jerry is competitive early and then fades and Rocky pounds out a stoppage ..

Muhammad Ali was well known for being too scared to offend anyone to ever speak his mind. It's a shame really.

He was so scared of the Mafia that would assassinate him if he dared insult Rocky that when asked which champion from history would be his stiffest test he choose to bring up Marciano.
