Anyone On Here That Thinks The 70 s, Golden Era, Is Overrated?

It was great because of Ali and Frazier , then Foreman .. H2H, Ali aside aside Frazier was an excellent P4P heavyweight, a top ten P4P but was small to defeat many much bigger guys based on the style he brought to the table .. The 70's Foreman is very overrated .. I think 86-96 w Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, Mercer is equally as good if not more so ...

 

Other eras may have had more entertaining fights ... but that era of heavyweights did a great job of finding ways to fight each other.

And a lot of the matchups that did occur aren't televised but actually did happen.

I mean Ron Lyle fought basically all the same name heavyweights Joe Frazier fought, plus more.

Lyle fought Buster Mathis, Manuel Ramos, Oscar Bonavena, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Ellis, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Bugner ... not to mention Shavers, Young and even Cooney. And Lyle was even supposed to fight Holmes in 1978, but Lyle got arrested for a shooting on New Year's Eve. So Shavers replaced him.

You can't watch either Shavers-Young fight. I'd like to see them and Ellis-Bugner.

The actual fights in the 70s may not have all be as exciting as some eras. There were quite a few huge blowouts and maybe even more snoozers. I mean neither Foreman-Frazier fight was remotely competitive. And many Ali fights were as dull as paste. Even his series with Norton isn't exactly exciting. The most exciting parts may have been the reading of the decisions.

But the variety of the matchups involving so many different fighters that took place across the board is hard to top.

 

I think the 90s is the most overrated but 70s is a bit overrated. I mean it’s really 65-75 is the best…imo. after 75 it’s rather weak.

 

No. IMO the golden era started the day Liston took the title off of patterson and it ended when Ali fought Spinks for the first time. This one is justifiably ranked the #1 heavyweight era of all time.
More Hall of Famers are from the Golden Age, more top competition, and more wins against top competition.

 

I don't see how the 90's were overrated. I mean, Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Tyson, Mercer, Ruddock, Morrison, the senior careers of 70s greats, ****.

 

Overrated 70s by far these are the only names people say Frazier Lyle ali jim Foreman larry
sometimes they will throw in liston but he was 60s
This is pathetic why is this short of a list considered a great era

compared to 90s when its way more hw who had more skill even mid carders

 

It was not devoid of talent the talent just didn’t fight each other as often as other eras…to many big fights just didn’t happen.

 

I prefer eras with active contenders fighting against each other than talented ones without proving themselves. In this case, 1970s shits on 1990s.

 

Oh God he’s back.

 

It's properly rated as the best heavyweight era of all time.

Where it gets overrated is when people hype up the contenders and act like all of them would be great champions in this era

 

It was the decade of the most ICONIC heavyweight fights
because of the most iconic heavyweight in history.
Ali was the catalyst of what is in my opinion the
greatest heavyweight era in history.
Is the era overrated? Maybe in some minds,
but boxing is supposed to be entertaining and competitive.
The era had the most entertaining fighter in the history
of the sport , plus a number of fighters who were great
and entertaining in their own right.
Though the 90's had some excellent fights, were
they as anticipated before and talked about long
after as the fights of the 70's?
Bowe vs Holyfield x 3 are just as entertaining as
Ali vs Frazier x3 but to casual fans they may
not know they even fought.
The world seem to stop when heavyweights fought
in the 70's.
I never felt that way in the 90's. about any fight.

 

And two of those fought in the 90s and didn't do too badly. Might want to bear that in mind @White Bomber when you make your habitual blinkered case for the 90s.

I like the 90s' heavies but that's a big one in favour of the 70s. Imagine taking any of the 90s heavies - whilst in their 40s - and plonking them into the 70s with all the fighters at heavyweight in their primes. 40something Lewis versus prime Holmes, 40 something Holyfield v prime Foreman?

If you think the 70s is overrated, what are the 90s? What prime match ups did we get? Bowe v Holy and that's it. The 70s was full of top fighters in their primes fighting each other.
