    Notables 70s HWs by tier
    Frazier, Ali, Foreman
    Norton, Quarry, Holmes
Lyle, Shavers, Young, Bonavena, Ellis, Bugner, Patterson

All would have been contenders or greats in any era.

Bowe-Lewis was the fight that didn't happen. Well, technically Lewis-Tyson didn't happen in the 90's either, Generally the big fights happened too late. Tyson-Holy should have happened in '91, Holy-Lewis preferably in '94 and Tyson-Lewis in '96.

Objectively the 70's was one of the best eras for the big fights happening. Undisputed champions facing the best contenders and the best contenders facing each other.

77-79 wasn't great in this aspect, but the rest of the decade was.

EDIT: Actually the 30's, 40's (with the exception of the title being frozen during WW2) and 50's were good in terms of the big fights happening also. Just didn't have as many of the epic battles such as Ali vs Frazier/Norton/Foreman, Holmes vs Norton, Foreman vs Lyle and Lyle vs Shavers or epic blowouts such as Foreman vs Frazier.

I thought about that also but Larry cut his teeth fighting/sparring 70s era fighters. He’d already fought Norton, Weaver, and Shavers x 2 before the decade was out. There’s also an excellent win over Roy Williams going a bit further back.

He came to the title relatively late age wise - 28 yo - his performances in the 80s being more reflective of decline than ascension - but Larry definitely kept himself in the 80s picture with some gusty performances and ATG heart.

I would say fair to perhaps call him more a love child of the 70s but certainly still kicking and screaming in the 80s.

Again, just thinking about non-heavyweight fights, a lot of key matchups got made - I’m thinking title unifications or equivalents: Zarate-Zamora (unfortunately, no straps on the line), Monzon-Valdez, Duran-DeJesus. We missed a few too but most of the time it was clear enough who the real champ was (e.g. Gomez at junior feather, Arguello at super feather, etc).

I understand the confusion. My bad- Mind you Monzon, Napoles and Griffith are 60s-70s fighters all are my favourites.
