If that is the case, then he wasn't so great in the 1st place because he was beaten twice at middleweight by Jermaine Taylor at 160 awhile before facing JC. However, Hopkins did turn down a proposed Calzaghe fight before they eventually fought.
Jones had been kod by Glencoffe Johnson and Antonio Tarver way before taking on JC. He couldn't even stop shot and previous stopped at 160 Tito at 170, a weight Tito had never fought at before. Obviously Jones was not fighting at a world class level anymore. In fact, it could be argued he was shot at that stage.
He was putting in the best performances of his career in that's why I regard him as being in his prime at that point. Name me a better string of results where he was beating better fighters than he was at that point in his career.
He nearly beat Lebedev who was one of the best cruisers in the world. Tarver and Johnson were both highly rated champions.
uysk and it aint close 20 fights two divison conquered all in thier own back yard what this man as accomplished wont be matched
Calzaghe was good but looked more sloppy in the ring, Usyk looks like a robot in there. Everything he does has a purpose, crisp movement and punches. Usyk has more skill imo.
He was beaten by Taylor because he was struggling to still make the weight and any fighter can have an off night and lose to another top fighter. Taylor was knocked out by Pavlick who Hopkins then completely annihilated so that just backs up my argument.
No. Hopkins weighed in at 156 when he fought ODLH so he couldn't have been weight drained. Added with the fact that Hopkins lost to Taylor (TWICE), never a great middleweight in the 1st place, renders your argument moot. Besides, natural middleweight Pavlik and Hopkins fought at lightheavy where Pavlik didn't belong in the 1st place. Reminds me of when Hopkins beat natural light-middle, middle Winky at lightheavy.
The 175 division was very weak then. I simply don't rate Johnson and Tarver particularly high. Perhaps you do.
Hopkins was definitely not prime when he fought Calzaghe - the run of fights Bernard was on makes zero difference, he was much better when he was younger. Watch him sometime, watch whole fights of his, all the way through. I am in the minority that believes he beat Calzaghe, I wouldn't call what Joe did in the ring that night 'effective aggression'. As far as Usyk or JC I'll go with Usyk, but Hopkins is greater than both, all-time.
