Anyone On Here That Thinks The 70 s, Golden Era, Is Overrated?

The Weaver battle was one of the best fights of the latter 70s. Plus, it is hard to downplay the mastery he showed during the Shavers 1 blow out.

 

I really do not put them up against Ali Frazier 1 and 3, Ali Foreman, Even the Foreman Frazier blowouts. The 3 Heavyweights, Ali, Foreman, and Frazier were the 70's. They made the biggest fights of the decade. When I think of 70's superfights, I think Ali Frazier or Ali Foreman before Holmes vs Weaver or Shavers comes to mind.

 

So do I, however Norton- Holmes is up there with most of those you listed imo. No disrespect intended.

 

Though a good fight, I think Holmes Norton lack that media fling that a superfight needs. It hardly ever gets brought up in the all-time great fights that Ali Frazier or Foreman gets, hell if we go back in history, Marciano Walcott, Louis vs Conn, or even maybe Dempsey Firpo or Johnson Jeffries would be mentioned first. We had more trends on this VERY FORUM covering Holmes 80's superlight with Cooney then we have of Norton. A fight that defines the decade needs that media fling.

 

Something can be both great and overrated

 

Holmes and Norton to me is a masive classic fight. One of the most two sided heavyweight fights in title history.
What amazed me is how Norton did so great, when only a couple of years later he was all but finished.

 

Don't agree concerning that particular era but fair enough.

 

Add Ken Norton to that list.
If Floyd Patterson was a champion in the 50s and 60s and Michael Moorer was good enough to win the lineal belt in the 90s certainly Norton could have been the champion for awhile until he faced a Liston or a Lennox Lewis type of puncher.

 

I think Norton is a level below the top 3. Yeah he became A champion, but even with the Spinks issue, Everyone knew Ali was the true champ. He beat Ali and was a top contender of the era, but I rank he under Patterson as for as champs go, and he be in the mix of most contenders. Putting Norton as a "Great" would be adding the likes of Shavers or maybe even Coony to that department.

 

That's fair because he didn't fare well against heavy hitters. That flaw kept him from achieving greatness. Not as much as the judges though.

but Holmes/Norton was probably the last great fight of that era

 

The whole era of the 70s is not overrated, but the last quarter of the 70s is.
The premature retirement of the second and third boxers in the 70s (George Foreman at age 28, Joe Frazier at age 32) caused Leon Spinks to become the champion.
So, I would characterize the era of heavyweights in the 70s: it was the strongest at the very beginning (FOTC), and since then it has only weakened.
The only worthy successor of the 70s is Larry Holmes, but in his case we are already entering the 80s.

 

Look at that list and compare with the champions of today then anybody tell me that boxing has moved on.

 

Manila could be called the last great fight of the 70s, sure there's others after like Norton vs Holmes but that era was defined by the Big 3. Both Frazier and Ali should have retired by Manila, while it was definitely premature retirement for George.
