This Bhop **** has been done to death... athletic prime obviously not. I dont get why they say that.. but his ring craft & theatrics was such that he was able negate his advancing years. Hes an anomaly. Dont forget one of this generations great fighters (Kovalev) legacy is built off of an even older Hopkins... thats what a freak he was.. & Calzaghe was hardly a baby, he was 36... that fight stunk but thats what Hopkins was, negative & a spoiler .. he liked to dictate the pace in fights.. Couldn't do it here tho hence why we saw what we saw .. if hed have engaged Joe in a fair bout hed have got overwhelmed, that was Hopkins maxed out trying every trick in the book he had against a Calzaghe who couldn't punch for **** anymore .. I think there's a reason Hopkins never fancied it in 2002. One thing ill give Joe is he never ran either.. he stood toe to toe.. Mitchell, Kessler, Eubank, Brewer, Bika, Lacy, Reid, Sheika etc .. even though he had the ability to just box their ass off he stood toe-to-toe & ended up out muscling them.. that's another thing that's underrated about Calzaghe as well as his footwork his physicality.. give him his dues he had no major Media hype behind him, no raging steroid program he just worked from his little shack with his dad and reached the Pinnacle, you've got to respect that. A quiet lad who achieved greatness. And if Jones was as great as you all said he was then surely even at 40 and 37 he should have still beat the brakes off the slappy euro.. all I ever hear from Americans is excuses , it's always how their fighters deserve a pass for everything & everyone else has to be held to higher standards... pasty waif Joe Calzaghe left a stream of American Fighters in his wake, just get over it
I was a big fan of Joe but Usyk is next level (maybe two levels) better. Usyk is better in every category, including ring IQ and is still building his legacy. No knock on Joe but he’s not close to Usyk. That said, Joe was an excellent fighter and I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves. Great fighter who got the most out of his physical skills.
Usyk is better, but Joe is a legend . White boy slapped the sheet out of hopkins until he started crying and made roid jones punch air all night.
I didn't say anything about Americans don't need to travel, this has nothing to do with USA v the rest of the world, or arrogance, and for the record I am a Brit in the UK. During Calzaghe's career, there were huge fights to be made for him in the states, and he chose not to pursue them and nurture his WBO title. This comes on the back of Benn and Eubank also choosing to have no part of going to the US to face RJJ Toney Hopkins.
Usyk maybe the better boxer but Joe had quicker hand speed and a better chin so there both pretty evenly matched.
Joe’s american sons like hopkins and roy jones have a lot of fans , they vote joe and it’s OK because joe was a great figher. Just like wilder’s fans believe that fury is one of the greatest ever because he beat wilder.
Call me crazy but I think it would be a competitive fight while it lasted but the Ukrainians size would be too much for Joe ultimately and he'd probably get smashed after some decent action.. Id certainly take Joe over someone like Bellew
What big fights? both RJJ and Tony were only at Super Middle for a short period when Joe was winning the British belt. The only valid fight would've been Hopkins but he priced himself out. So no there's another poster on here who spouts the same nonsense without merit. What was Joe supposed to do chase Jones and Toney upto Cruiser and Heavy?
