I think he was simply to small to be effective at heavyweight. He won gold at light heavyweight and the CW division he was successful in was when the weight limit was 190.

He was certainly more of an boxer as an amateur but once he started working with those Philly guys he became a prototypical swarmer. That pressure style worked against guys like Arthur Williams and Dale Brown but not a counter puncher like Toney.

Definitely ticks some boxes. Morrison was a wrecking ball until he ran into Mercer and even in that fight he had moments. He might have problems getting good opponents but possible a great white American hope hype train behind him (like Morrison had) ups the money he can offer.

How would he do with Freddie Roach as his trainer? Could he turn him into a HW Pacquiao?

He actually reminds me of James Kirkland. Same bumrushing, same squaring up, same recklessness, same powerful straight left hand.

Torrez has more skill and pedigree than that, but I ultimately I think he'll top out as a high end gatekeeper. Will make for some fun fights, tho. I'm glad he's in the division.

They were at completely different stages of development at that stage.

Jalolov was a 25 year old 6-0 pro at this stage. Torrez was a 20 year old full amateur.

Not saying Torrez ever beats him (Pretty big size difference) but this fight isn't a fair standard to judge.

Not only that, Jalolov was on his second Olympics campaign. That's a huge advantage for any fighter. Most of the other guys who competed at Tokyo were on their first. Unlike Torrez, Jalolov didn't make the final first time around.

I also don't understand why the Americans keep saying Jared Anderson is their best H/W prospect. He couldn't beat Torrez in the amateurs which is why he turned pro well in advance of the Olympics. When did the Americans last have a guy who made the Olympic final at Super Heavy? Riddick Bowe didn't look as good as Torrez & he went okay as a pro.

I think the reason people aren't high on Torrez is b/c of that brutal knockout in the 2019 Worlds against Jalolov.

David Tua was stopped in 17 seconds by Felix Savon at the World Amateur Championships in 1991. He went on & won an Olympic medal less than 12 months later & was never stopped as a pro.

I was just thinking this and was going to make the same thread. Something about the way he moves and loads up reminds me of Morrison.

I also feel they'll have similar career potential (big KO streak up to getting savagely KO'd themselves). They also have that hometown American thing going on (Morrison being the GWH before W's dominated the HW landscape, and Torrez representing the hopes of a more modern America).

I see a little bit of the Morrison comparison in the way he moves. Tommy's left hook was more explosive with leverage and he was blowing away all opponents early in his career like nothing. Torrez's punches have that thump to them where opponents are getting hurt when he doesn't even extend fully, and he's very strong on the inside to manhandle fighters. He's mismatched against the typical pro level experience opponent because of his high amateur level career and is ready for the likes of 10-15 pro fight prospects like Anderson now. The question is how does he deal with some of the taller fighters that have a jab to keep him at bay and a right to make him pay coming in. Also what kind of chin does he have.

Overall, very pro & fan friendly style and I could see him getting a lot of fans and big following. Also, he could improve as he's very young. He handled adversity well in the Amateurs after getting KO'd by Jalolov to then go the distance with him later. In the pros he has the same size & height disadvantages but it's different where the fight is longer and he could possibly beat these opponents with endurance and pressure. I want to see him fast tracked to better opponents, and put him in with someone like Babic.

Is George Lopez the same race as Cameron Diaz?

Torrez's great grandfather came to America from Mexico, perhaps he was a white Mexican or even if he was mixed the rest of Torrez's family might be of a different background altogether.

Your surname does not necessarily correlate with your background. Robert De Niro and Leonardo Di Caprio have Italian surnames but are only 1/4 Italian.

How about Carlos Estevez aka Charlie Sheen? A quarter Spaniard who always says he just considers himself a white person?

He had more than moments. He dominated until he got caught.
