Are the heavyweight mismatches like we saw last night dangerous?

    Last night, we had:

Jozsef Darmos vs Efe Ajagba - horrible mismatch

Marco Antonio Canedo vs Richard Torrez - poor guy was so badly hurt, I think they were afraid he was dead

Miljan Rovcanin (BoxRec #292 HW going into fight) vs Jared Anderson - mismatch

These fights do little for the prospects, are not entertaining competitive matchups for the fans, and worst of all, are very dangerous for the overmatched opponents. People get seriously hurt in such fights, especially if they have a lot of courage and keep getting up after being hurt.

Why couldn't we have had real fights, like Anderson vs Ajagba? Or Ajagba in with a decent journeyman like Rice, Balogen or Forrest? Or Anderson in with someone durable like Agit Kabayel?

It's very unethical for promoters to keep making the kind of mismatches we saw last night.

So basically you are asking if boxing a dangerous sport run by incompetent half wits who don't care about fighters and would gladly brain their own grandmother for a nickel?

    Yes.

I know you're not new to the sport so... those men choose to get into the ring.

Not trying to be rude or anything but this has existed as long as boxing has. Every time they step into the ring they leave with less of themselves for a chance at fame, fortune or just to prove something.

Yeah. These mismatches could end up getting these guys killed or give them life changing affects for their health.

It was a bad look, but showcase fights facilitate this type of thing and the prospects do need experience. I think the issue last night was the Mexican kid. He didn't belong in the ring with an Olympian. I thought Anderson's opponent was fine; at least he knew how to defend himself.

Yes, very dangerous. Mismatches to make prospects look good and to puff up their records is nothing new in boxing. Putting severely overmatched guys in the ring with big punchers is very dangerous. Most of those no hope opponents had no business in the ring last night. I guess promoters didn’t want to take any chances and wanted guaranteed wins. It’s irresponsible and dangerous. No one cares for injured fighters, they are too busy celebrating highlight reel KOs. I refuse to watch these fights or support them. Unfortunately fans quickly forget level of opposition and only focus on the brutal KO.

Thus is why I respect guys like Lomachenko and Usyk. No fluff on their records, no record padding stiffs or bums. Wish more fighters would follow this path but they are the minority, the exceptions. Boxing is rotten to the core and clueless fans help make this possible.

Boxers that are like puddings with no ability, durability, smarts, stamina should not be sanctioned to fight. they should have developed a few of those survival skills through years of boxing, be it defence, roughhouse tactics, movement etc, but in the end its their fault, they had no amatuer background but just walked into the pros to make money and get braindamaged. Not the prospects KOing them.

This, mismatches have been going on since the beginning of the sport. Those journeymen are willingly going in there with a hungry prospect and still choose to come into fights unprepared. There’s pretty much nothing that can be done about it either since prospects need these types of fights

It's not just the heavyweights, all weight classes do this. It's relative to the power that guys can take (unless you're talking about Inoue).

    What's the solution to building a fighter's skills/resume safely? I don't think there's a way around this.

Wasn't the guy that Anderson fought something like 22-3?

Isn't Anderson transitioning from prospect to contender?

So, exactly who in the hell is he suppose to fight?

I put the blame on the commissions OKing these fights or not taking steps to remedy these mismatches in the future. They could not sanction them, and in the past they have (though its sporadic when they do)

ESPN matching home grown boys up against complete bums. Then they talked like the victories actually meant something. They continually referred to Anderson as everyone's choice as next dominant HW. The unanimous best HW prospect out there, etc. ESPN didn't want even remotely competitive matches.

The terrible thing is apparently boxers are responsible for their own medical bills for injuries incurred during a match. What other sport gets away with this? odds are that Mexican kids pay for last night wouldn't even cover the ambulance ride afterwards.

It was sickening. I will not watch these types of fights if I can help it. One guy in particle stood out to me. He was a chubby dude with no boxing skills. He took a bunch of unanswered shots to the head against the ropes. This isn’t boxing, it’s sanctioned brutality. I understand wanting to feed tomato cans to prospects but at least put guys in who can defend themselves. I don’t blame the fighters, commissions should never sanction these types of fights.

I thought every boxing fan knew that records can be very misleading. Rovcanin was ranked #292 at heavyweight by BoxRec. He's never defeated a single decent opponent.
Someone in the BoxRec top 200 heavyweights. Someone who will give him some rounds.

A decent journeyman like Forrest, Rice, Kuzmin, Cusomano, Dawejko, Negron, Teper, Rudenko, etc.

Even old Kevin Johnson is much better than the guy he fought last night.
