No he couldn't. His stated aim was undisputed. That's all him and Matchroom FC ever talk about. They even made a film about it. He can't go around vacating when an actual challenge turns up for the first time. How is that going to look? Even then he insisted on a rematch clause that he wasn't entitled to.

So he has the ambition to become undisputed having been 2 times unified. Perfectly laudable ambition. The fact is he did not duck Usyk or anyone which is to his credit. As for the rematch clause it was contractual which his opponents are glad to grant. If it is in the contract he is entitled to it full stop. Usyk agreed to it, the only one who has an issue with is a few of you. I wonder why?

 

None of that is relevant to what I quoted. You said he could've vacated but didn't because 'he doesn't roll like that'. I corrected you. That's all. They gave Usyk an ultimatum so he absolutely does roll like that. Fury insisted on no rematch clause for Whyte for example.
This is before we get on to the fact that his team entertained step aside. Talks were had.
So quit trying to make him out to be a throwback who takes on all comers regardless. He took the fight as long as the opposition bowed to all his conditions. They did, and when it made no difference he went into meltdown.

Whyte had no leverage to ask for a rematch clause AJ does simple as that. It was Team Furywho suggested step aside talks with AJ but as usual they did not have their end in order.

Don't think he's at all overrated. Most people now seem him as a solid, good fighter a couple of levels below the best of the best but able to provide them with decent opposition. I think he's rated appropriately but because of Hearn (doing his job, I guess) he was oversold rather than overrated...

 

No you misunderstand. Tyson Fury insisted there was no rematch clause for the fight between him and Whyte because he was a mandatory. If he won then Whyte would be free with the belts. AJ does the opposite and always insists on a clause, so he does 'roll like that'. Regardless of who did what, AJ considered step aside and this for a rematch that HE insisted on. Further evidence he's not the take-on-all-comers throwback warrior you're trying to paint him as.

He was forced in to this fight, plain and simple.
