I know there's a few of you on here who have strongly endorsed the series by Adam Pollack. I've just now purchased the John L Sullivan book. I hope it's as good as I've heard (well read).
Made my first purchase of Adams books not long ago @apollack the Jack Johnson one the first part. It’s not biographic in a conventional sense? (not a bad thing) it’s just unbiased facts and something of a university text book type read of all the knowledge you can find on the subject of the fighter. It’s an educating series from what I’ve bit my teeth into and a blessing for us fans. I will have the whole set someday and my kids will be sat at the table before bed to read up on the man painted on there bedroom ceilings from those very books (JD) shame Adam passed never finishing his Mona Lisa. (RIP)
Yeah that was my experience of the Dempsey one. A really good library of the facts…worth every penny, first hand reports, excellent stuff, a real education…then make your own mind up. Really looking forward to part two!
Yes, I died. Always trust what you read on the internet! I plan to publish Dempsey II from the grave. ;-)
It's so hard to say which ones are best. I think i'd go 1) Jeffries 2) Fitz 3) Corbett. But they're all so good.
I'm actually really looking forward to the Fitzsimmons one the most. But as I'm sure you can appreciate, there was 0 chance of me buying book number 3 in a series with out first reading 1 and 2 lol.
I'm from Louisiana and let me tell you something...not all purchases are what they're cracked up to be. ...That was going to be my comment before reading the thread. So, we all missed out on that one.
I've read all but the Marvin Hart and revised Sullivan books. I think they've been getting better as he continues the series, tho with subjects like Johnson and Dempsey on the back end of the progression that is understandable. In my opinion, they represent the benchmark for rigorous boxing history.
That puts a new spin (literal) on the term Ghostwriter. Opens up to a whole new series of books - Adam Pollack’s Boxing Tales From Beyond The Grave, Read If You Dare. First book, Greb: Fact or Fiction?, Adam finally speaks to the man himself…or does he? Part 1 - 1022 pages.
Of the ones I have, I like to call them my tomes - I’ve bought and turfed so much junk boxing literature over the years. These books aren’t going anywhere and will remain in pristine condition. Aside from the rich content, physically, the pages, covers and rare photos included are all top shelf quality. Very much worth the price at every level.
