    I watched 2 Donald Curry fights today that I needed to see. Here we go:

    Donald Curry v Curtis 'The Razor' Ramsey

    This was a 9-0 Curry who was clearly a blue-chip prospect at the time against the solid Ramsey. I say solid because, despite the fact that he knew he was there as fodder to build up the hotshot Curry, he never fought like a stepping stone. He did everything to mess with Curry and never stopped trying. He definitely had Curry flustered by fight's end. But despite Ramsey's knowledge around the ring, I still gave every round to Curry. Actual scores were 98-92, 98-93 and 96-94. I could see the first two but not the third. A Curry in his incubation period.

    Donald Curry v Nino LaRocca (welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 LaRocca
    Round 3: 10-9 LaRocca
    Round 4: 10-9 Curry
    Round 5: 10-9 Curry
    Round 6: Curry drops Nino twice and stops him

    Total through 5 completed rounds: 48-48 (actual scores: 48-48, 48-47 and 49-47 with Curry leading)

    Man, I remember LaRocca so well back in the day. He was really making a lot of noise, especially when he beat up on Bobby Joe Young and Pete Ranzany. But Curry really burst the LaRocca bubble here. Nino threw sharp flurries in and out until Curry stepped it up. Nino also fought dirty with the head and heeling and really heavy with grabbing the back of Curry's head and pulling his head into a right uppercut. But when Curry did step it up Nino collapsed like a deck of cards. I wouldn't call either of these fights scintillating, but I still enjoyed seeing them for their historical value.

    For about 5 minutes, Nino was this mysterious, intriguing boogeyman who just *might* be the next big thing … and coming basically out of left field.

    Put together a nice collection of scalps, stopped some guys you wouldn’t expect him to stop (some early) and passed the eye test with his hand speed and combos.

    Then Curry happened.

    First of three losses in a row (including a DQ loss vs. Rene Jacquot) and then he stepped it way down in competition and put together another string of wins (highlighted by beating Kirkland Laing) and … lost two in a row and was gone.

    I never classified him as a fraud but he’s Exhibit A in ‘there are levels to boxing.’

    Felix Trinidad vs. Ricardo Mayorga on October 2, 2004 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York

    Round 1: Trinidad 10-9
    Round 2: Trinidad 10-9
    Round 3: Mayorga 10-8 (Tito's hand grazed the canvas, so it was called a knockdown. It was clear that Mayorga's punch didn't hurt him, though)
    Round 4: Trinidad 10-9
    Round 5: Trinidad 10-9
    Round 6: Trinidad 10-9
    Round 7: Trinidad 10-9
    Round 8: Tito drops Mayorga three times en route to the TKO win


    My score: 68-64 Trinidad through seven complete rounds.


    This fight is awesome. It's just nonstop action all of the way through. This was probably Felix's last true great performance as he fell off right after this match. Ricardo Mayorga's entertaining as hell, so he's always gonna be fun to watch in some form or fashion. Every punch he throws is aimed at ending the fight. Tito really did start wailing on him though, especially from rounds 5-8 (Mayorga left himself open a lot, which lead to him getting beat up). He honestly showed heart saying in there as long as he did because he was taking some MASSIVE shots.

    One of my favourite fights. Literally no downside to this as Tito is matched perfectly against Mayorga and kicks his ass. And I really enjoy seeing Mayorga take a beatdown - such an easy guy to dislike.

    I think people were expecting a firefest back then, and that's what they got. And Mayorga is indeed someone who is easy to like, so it's always good to see someone like that get their comeuppance.

    Felix Trinidad v Ricardo Mayorga

    Needed a good old toe-to-toe today to clear the head and I alighted on Felix Trinidad v Ricardo Mayorga. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Trinidad
    Round 2: 10-9 Trinidad
    Round 3: 10-8 Mayorga (scores a flash knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-8 Trinidad (dishes out a battering)
    Round 6: 10-9 Trinidad
    Round 7: 10-9 Mayorga
    Round 8: Tito drops Mayorga 3 times and the fight is stopped

    Total (through 7 completed rounds): 67-65 Trinidad (actual scores: 68-64, 68-64 and 67-64 all for Trinidad)

    A terrific old barn-burner was just the ticket today. Both landed their shots but Tito's were more precise and wicked. Loved it. BTW, the knockdown scored by Mayorga may have been official, but it was more of a Trinidad glove touching down steadying himself. But it is what it is.

    Not much to say about this one that hasnt been said before, an absolute classic slugfest. Two good friends who are just in the mood to beat the **** out of one another. Always find it a shame watching Gatti in early rounds when he was younger because you can tell he was a very talented boxer-puncher with great punch choice and good technique but once the eyes would inevitably start closing up it'd get thrown out the window and then it was time to go to the Homer Simpson school of boxing.

    Ray Mercer vs Wlad Klitchsko
    Round 1: Klitchsko10-8
    Round 2: Klitchsko 10-9
    Round 3: Klitchsko 10-9
    Round 4: Klitchsko 10-9
    Round 5: Klitchsko 10-9
    Round 6: Klitchsko KO

    I remember watching this live and even though Mercer was long in the tooth, I was shocked Klitchsko dropped Mercer in round 1 and almost stopped him. Mercer pushed out his mouthpiece after the knockdown and gave a long thought about not getting up, but to his credit he did and took a bad beating the rest of the way. Mercer landed a few hard jabs and was marking Elad's face, but Wlad was a house of fire here really putting his foot to the floor. I wonder if the fight continued would Kltichsko be in trouble in the later rounds, he set a crazy pace and, well, he had run out of gas before. Wasn't to be though, the ref saw Mercer eat enough leather and......mercifully stopped the fight.

    I watched the end of the first Lewis-McCall fight.

    Some people say it was an early stoppage. Yeah, no. Lewis was out of it after that punch.

    Jermain Taylor (WBC/WBO Middleweight Champion) vs. Kelly Pavlik (Challenger) I on September 29, 2007 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey

    Round 1: Pavlik 10-9
    Round 2: Taylor 10-8 (insane flurry of punches from Jermain knock Kelly down)
    Round 3: Pavlik 10-9
    Round 4: Taylor 10-9
    Round 5: Taylor 10-9
    Round 6: Taylor 10-9
    Round 7: Pavlik stops Taylor via TKO after a brutal assault while Taylor is pinned against the ropes


    My score: 58-55 Taylor going into the 7th, but the rounds were hell to score because they were so seesaw.


    God, I love this fight. It's back-and-forth action and pretty much every round besides the second could've gone either way. One of the best fights of the 2000s and definitely one of the most feelgood wins of the decade as well. It's impossible not to feel happy seeing Kelly Pavlik achieve his dream.

    Machen:

    The first round seemed to go on forever, but it didn't take long for Liston to establish him jab and it didn't take long for them to fall into their respective roles as bull and matador. I wouldn't call it a feeling out round, but it was a bit nip and tuck. Liston just edged it for me.

    The fight never really progresses from the first round. Liston marches behind his jab, Machen tries to box on the back foot but is being out landed.

    Round by round goes by and Liston takes them almost by default due to the way Machen is fighting.

    I can feel Listons frustrations as a viewer myself.

    Each round was competitive in terms of the margin of victory, but I didn't think Machen won a single round.

    Liston had a point deducted in the 11th so using the ten point must it's

    119-108

    I think.

    Machen sucks
