    Liston vs Westphal

Westphal really comes to win here, he is trying to confuse Liston with angles and footwork, utilising ambush attacks and quick combos.

But Liston lands a solid 1-2 that damn near kills him in the ring.

    Patterson vs Liston

Patterson does some good work here. He slips a tonne of Listons power shots and gets some good body work in.

The problem is when Liston misses with the right hand, the left immediately follows and Patterson can't slip those, he tries to block and roll with them.

This leads to Liston just blunt force traumaing him.

Eventually, well after about a minute, Pattersons legs begin to freeze and then it's all over. Liston tees off on him and drops him, hard.

    Liston vs Patterson 2

Patterson tries to stick and move a bit, but his jab is so poor compared to Liston, all he does is find himself getting pinned down again.

    And then the destruction begins.

Liston stops him again in the first round.

    Liston vs Clay

Clay is amazing here. So quick, so strong, so reflexive.

He just dominates and really peppers the face of Liston, landing at will and evading almost everything coming back at him.

Liston quits on his stool after 6 rounds.

    Ali vs Liston

Liston tries to really take the fight to Ali, but Ali is just much too quick and strong to be bowled over by him.

During the first round Liston walks right into an absolute missile of a right hand from Ali who damn near takes his head off.

Jersey Joe is very inept between the punch and the end of the fight.

    Acelino Freitas vs Jorge Barrios

August 9, 2003 for Freitas' WBA and WBO 130 junior lightweight belts.

Round 1 - 10-9 Freitas - Enjoyable first round. Both men dispensed with the feeling out process after a half minute or so.
    Round 2 - 10-9 Barrios
    Round 3 - 10-9 Freitas
    Round 4 - 10-9 Freitas
    Round 5 - 10-9 Freitas
    Round 6 - 10-9 Freitas
    Round 7 - 10-9 Barrios
    Round 8 - 10-8 Barrios
    Round 9 - 10-9 Barrios
    Round 10 - 10-9 Barrios
Round 11 - 10-9 Barrios - Great round! Freitas went down hard in the first minute from a jab and straight round. Barrios has the advantage the rest of the way until the final second of the round. Freitas unloaded a perfect hellacious right to Barrios' jaw. Barrios was stopped in his tracks before going down hard. Somehow, he managed to get up.
Round 12 - Freitas wins by TKO as the referee stopped the fight. The one minute between rounds was not enough for Barrios to recover. The fight was stopped at the :50 mark after Barrios had gone down once and was staggering around the ring.

My score - 105-103 Barrios. Actual scores 106-104 Barrios, 106-103 Freitas and 105-105.

Very enjoyable fight which I highly recommend.

Glad you mentioned Ali’s strength. Very underrated and he was clearly the stronger fighter against a (big ugly) bear of a man.

I think it was Ken Norton who commented on Ali’s musculature when someone suggested Ali wasn’t strong and Ken put that to rest — said when you hit Ali anywhere it was like hitting concrete. Ali had what is called muscle density … except when he came in flabby at times later in his career, he was like cordwood — no give whatsoever in his body. Look at how he laughed off body shots by even the likes of Foreman.

Yeah Liston against Patterson was like man vs boy.

This fight was more like man vs man, except one had a huge advantage athletically speaking.

I like this fight a lot too, underrated one. Crowd was great and both fighters were fighting with a lot of emotions - made it very enjoyable one to watch indeed.

    Jorge Lujan W15 Albert Davila

I had been anxious to see this one, and was intrigued if slightly underwhelmed by the fight itself.

It was a hard thing to score; Davila was dogged and aggressive in that incfremental, undemonstrative way he had. I feel that approach, mandated perhaps by his lack of size, strength, and power, left him on the bad end of some close fights. He nearly got Pintor but.....nto quite. He nearly got Lujan here, but.........not quite. In honesty, I thought he deserved it. He made the fight all the way, and Lujan scored with only occasional short flurries or singular right hands that had no effect. Davila persistently worked the body, shot those short little jabs of his through Lujan's guard, forcing him to the ropes consitstently.......bad decision here, it really was. But Lujan is Panamanian, and the WBA loves them some Panamanians and Venezuelans. Bit of a stacked deck here. The scores were wide for Lujan too, relatively speaking, which made me think the judges already knew who was going to win ahead of time. Shame, as Davila was clearly the better man here.

Inttriguing technical fight if not great action. I'd be very interested to read some other cards on this one.

Azumah Nelson v Mario Martinez 1

I doubt Martinez ever fought better than in this fight and I think he was extremely unlucky not to get the decision.

Martinez seemed to be in control of the ring centre, landing left hook counters (one which dropped Azumah in the tenth) and generally beating Nelson to the punch.

I think this one was a bad call.

Jel, I had it even wider at 116-112. Totally agree, Martinez deserved the verdict and the title.

    Round 2: JFE 10 - 10 AC
    Round 3: JFE 10 - 9 AC
    Round 4: JFE 9 - 10 AC
    Round 5: JFE 9 - 10 AC
    Round 6: JFE 9 - 10 AC
Round 7: JFE 10 - 8 AC Argi takes a knee and Estrada goes hunting for the body for the rest of the round, great ****ing round
    Round 8: JFE 10 - 9 AC
    Round 9: JFE 9 - 10 AC
    Round 10: JFE 9 - 10 AC
    Round 11: JFE 9 - 10 AC
    Round 12:: JFE 9 - 10 AC

    TOTAL: 116-112 Argi Cortez
Judges: 115-112, 115-112, 114-113 all for Juan Francisco Estrada

I knew when i seen the Nacho Man that not was all as it seemed in this fight. Typical Estrada inbetween fight, lot of swing rounds and bouts of inactivity. The ring rust was evident for Estrada and im sure hes glad to have got out of this one unscathed. You cant ask for a much better tune-up fight than 12 rounds with a guy with a good chin who wants to shock the world. Really liked Argi's inside work and combinations and high activity, not the biggest puncher ever though, hes got a lot of good fights ahead for himself off the back of this imo. Looking forward to Estrada and Chocolatito doing it all over again.
