Nothing pisses me off more than when people call fighters bums especially when most of the people that call them that never fought. Too answer your question no they didn't deserve that title. Louis was simply that much better than the majority of his competion.

 

It was Journalistic Flare & Spin, more so than litteral fact... New York 'wiseguy' patter and that era kinda talk.

Did he? I don't recall ever seeing Louis disrespect an opponent. I could be wrong. Pretty sure the press came up with that which is who I am mostly talking about.

I thought it was because he would fight anyone that wanted to challenge him and he ran through a bunch of journeymen

his promoter wanted a fight every month of less than worthy opponents, Billy Conn was to be the finale and the only "worthy" opponent

 

That was well after he had retired. Who was the first person to call those fighters bums? It was not Louis. I'm sure it was a non fighter.

 

The term was coined by Jack Miley in December 1940. It's unfair of course, but at the time Louis was set to defend once a month against a string of opponents who were given so little chance of winning that it was considered safe to sign up the next one before he had even gone through with the formality of knocking out the last.
