Wilder held his title for five years. Joshua's two reigns lasted a combined five years.

Between them, they made 17 successful title defenses.

When the third and fourth best fighters in a division have a combined 17 successful defenses in that division, that's a deep division.

Name another division like that? There isn't one.

And there are plenty of strong fighters on the rise.

The heavyweight division is all people want to talk about.

For good reason.

 

the heavyweight division is always the best division because the heavyweights are better than little men.
but compared with past. it is weak. in a strong division regardless of past defences a boxer who had not a win in almost 3 year (Wilder) would be overtaken by active winning up comer boxers . this is not criticism of Wilder.

It was a good match, when it mattered. Its still a high risk fight tho, just a type of fight i dont think Fury would risk before fighting Usyk next year.

 

I think Fury earns more from the AJ fight possibly
I think the risk is bypassing AJ & then whether win or lose with Usyk there's risk AJ loses to someone else in meantime & AJ retires or loses value

they are both huge paydays right now
& makes sense to get the AJ one first
since Usyk isn't going anywhere else & will wait for Fury

Fury losing to AJ is not a big risk because he will put in rematch clause

the big risk is letting AJ go somewhere else

 

I want to see Fury-Usyk, if Joshua beats Fury that fight wouldnt matter anymore honestly. AJ would still have a big punchers chance to ruin it all

So, if AJ wins, he fights Usyk for a 3rd time? If that happens, AJ should take a page from the bull riding world. If a rider knows he cannot ride that bull, or fears he may get hurt, he gets on the bull and when the gate opens, the rider jumps off. AJ should do the same. Once the 1st bell rings, reach over the ropes grap the belt, drop to one knee and present the belt to Usyk.

 

I don't think he will feel that way. If he improves as much as he did in the last one on the judges' cards he will win. If he didn't have the belief in himself that he can do that, I don't think he would have reached this level. He will look at the 10th and feel that he won't let Usyk steal his momentum like that next time. In the back of his mind will also be the fact that Usyk is getting older.

Now, much of this might not be the actual reality of a third meeting, but in his mind I think a win will be a possibility.

 

I don't think severe delusion is healthy preparation for a fight with your tormentor. Look at the effect it has had on Wilder.

 

Joshua had no choice about what happened in round 10. He blew his load punching thin air for the last minute of the 9th - after success in the first part of the round - and his tank had been emptied. Usyk on the other hand rode out the storm and preserved his energy knowing full well Joshua has a history of needing multiple rounds to recharge the batteries after an onslaught. Hence his counter attack in the 10th.

The myth of round nine - perpetuated by the commentators at the time and, after the fight, by Hearn - masks a slightly better showing in the rematch but not the transformative display talked about. Re-watch round nine, Joshua missed a hell of a lot when he went for the kill - specifically the last minute or so of the round - and many of the punches that did make contact found Usyk's guard...

 

I agree. But I think in his mind he will feel he can do better. Guys on this level are always at least a bit delusional, it seems.

 

There's a fine line between delusion and self-belief, I agree...
