Does GGG get a lot of credit if he manages to beat Canelo?

If GGG somehow managed to pull off a miracle win and finally avenge his only loss how much credit does he get for beating him, especially since he’s fighting Canelo right after his loss to Bivol? And how much does a win over Canelo elevate his ATG status?

Neither fighter will get credit I think. If Canelo wins it is because GGG is old and Canelo dragged him up to 168, if GGG wins, then it's because Canelo was overrated and coming off a loss. Boxing fans are the worst. Just wait and see all the threads tomorrow night.

I think they are two really good fighters and I just hope that it is a clear win for one guy. Vegas isn't giving Golovkin much of a chance. I absolutely hated his gameplan for their last fight so I'm a bit concerned that team Golovkin will get outcoached again. It would be great if he could change up his punch speed and tempo every once in a while and maybe catch Canelo with something he doesn't see or maybe have an uppercut waiting when Canelo lunges in countering a GGG Jab. Canelo just has to use his speed advantage, land some clean snappy shots and not get caught and he should win.

I will say this though, I think if one guy KOs the other, that will resonate for a LONG time.

Well for starters he has the most title defenses of any MWs. He’s a first ballot HOFer.

true, but how many wins against other future hof fighters did he have, compared to others in that club, also matters. how many were against era fill ins. im not downplaying his achievements, i want a proper perspective. besides canelo, who is the most historically significant fighter g has beat? in your opinion.

Of course. He should be 2-0 against the supposed best fighter of our generation when well past his best and the absolute worst case scenario is he's 1-1 against them losing to a juiced version of them by a single point. But if he can somehow manage to pull off a miracle tonight at 40 y/o when inactive and a mere shell of his former self it will be huge. Prime GGG KOs Clen but imagine what he'd do to a 35-40 y/o version of him.

Whoever wins tomorrow it will be a defining moment in their legacy. If Canelo wins it is a great win, probably the best available for him south of 175.

But if GGG wins it will be historic, one of the best wins of the era.

I've mentioned some reasons I think it could be competitive, but those don't eliminate the immense credit GGG deserves for a win.

Look at guys like Carlos Zarate, Ricardo Lopez, Orlando Canizales and tell me how many HOF fighters they’ve beaten. They’ve fought and destroyed a lot of fighters they faced and defended their titles but didn’t have any great notable HOF wins. Same applies with GGG. He fought whoever they could match him with.

If Golovkin pulls out a win he will certainly get credit, especially down the road. History does not micro--destroy the value of victories the way boxing fans seem to do in the moment. Golovkin, at the age of 40, will have become the undisputed, 4-belt unified super middleweight champion of the world. That is a fantastic accomplishment.

Grzegorz Proksa, Willie Monroe, Kell Brook, Daniel Jacobs, David Lemieux, Derevyenchenko, and Murata are his notable wins, but they aren’t what I consider HOFers. I think many can agree that the MW era wasn’t so great when GGG was around. Still, his number of title defenses is something to take note of.

He did at one point, he had 20 title defenses. GGG beat him when he made 21 title defenses.
