Fair enough but boxing is far bigger than one promoter and there are plenty of cards to watch these days. The card on BT Sport last night was great if you missed it.
This isn't a Matchroom-bashing post. But Eddie and Barry keep going on about their great organisation and how they've grown, they're not a corner shop like the Warrens, etc... You'd think if that was the case and they're grooming the future promoters in the business like young Frank - it might be possible to announce things without Eddie having to do it? They're stuck in this perpetual thing between 'family business' and being able to execute this global expansion; Eurosport was even interviewing Barry about snooker the other day, thought he'd retired?
Excellent post. I completely agree with your considerations. Eddie Hearn talks about Matchroom as if it is the world's biggest promoter / promotion company and it is definitely not. In fact, I don't think the future looks very bright for Matchroom here in the U.K.
I watched Frank Warren's event last night on BT Sport and it was surprisingly good. By the way : Andy Clarke and Richie Woodhall were a joy to listen to. DAZN UK should hire Andy Clarke.
Not sure Clarke would want to join DAZN UK when his career has a much higher profile on BT Sports? Netflix lost a large number of subscribers due to people cutting back due to cost of living crisis and DAZN UK will suffer badly during this period unless there is world class boxing week in week out. According to the DAZN thread on this forum, there are not many happy subscribers so clearly not happening. Was great to see a good boxing card at the home of boxing on a Friday evening as well.
Totally agree on Clarke and Woodhall; you'd think Clarke might hedge his bets just now though, no shortage of options. Woodhall was great on the Bunce podcast during Usyk-AJ fight week and saved it from being a Bunce squeal fest; Woodhall is a respectful interviewer and you could see people in boxing take him seriously too.
