The fight, almost thirty years ago now, between the legendry Chavez verses the Alaskan hard man.
More than 132, 000, largest paid attendance for boxing.
Crazy. So how did this fight get to be so big?
Was the result ever really in doubt to?
What were your thoughts about the build up to the fight?

Basically Haugen disrespected Chavez and the Mexican people. They all just wanted to see a good ole country ass whoppin' from their boy Chavez for all the **** talking Haugen had been doing and Chavez delivered. Chavez was and still is the most popular Mexican boxer in history.

I wish we had a man like JCC around today. The business needs a warlord like Jullio to lead the way and shed this abstract dream like state boxing is in.

Yes I remember the things that Greg was coming out with, before the fight.

Remember thinking, that's going to go down great with Chavez!!

    And did it!!

There's no one that I can think of right now, that comes even close.
Idk, somehow boxing s become staid.
The guys like Chavez, Hagler, Duran, even down to such as Jeff Fenech, don't seem to get many like that.

Haugens big mouth made this fight so popular. Credit to him for fronting up to a massive, feral Mexican crowd like that but Chavez absolutely brutalised him and could’ve ended it in one round imo but wanted to prolong Haugans beating and humiliation.

Funny that a guy that could give the Camacho’s and Pazienza’s heaps could be so helpless against JCC. It proves that there really is levels to this sport.

I think Fenech might have been the last of that breed. Now we are up to our necks in smoke and we are living in a room of mirrors.

Everything I loved about boxing and what got me in to it, years ago, is no longer there. Simple as.
I can't get excited about a fight now, this generation of fighters does nothing for me.

I can’t think of anyone that stands out or I want to get behind or say to myself “I want to fight like that guy” I see Inoue who I think is best of what’s left an say “Would he stand out next to guys his own size like Duran?” Mm.

Because they were both exciting & top willing fighters, No B.S or dodging "the Real Fights or Opponents"...

JCC for unbeatable greatness, Haugan for tough willingness and always a good show and an in it fighter.

    then of course "the Schtick"

Fun fact for your time. Samart bet his entire purse he'd beat Fenech and became a monk after he lost.

I’ve been disillusioned with the modern game for a while now.
With the split titles and journeymen fighters winning meaningless belts and strutting around being called world champions that did it for me.
I could name all the champions and the top ten contenders in the rings ratings once upon a time, I don’t know who most of them are now.

Lol. Wonder if a few other fighters felt like doing that eventually!
