I actually have Canelo number 3.

Smith, Plant, Saunders, Govkin, Fielding and Yildrim is the third best resume in this **** poor division.

    A few points:

It’s a travesty that Toney had weight issues in 1994. It robbed Roy of more recognition. Personally, I don’t see a 100% Toney doing any better. The fight wasn’t fought at a fast pace. Toney couldn’t deal with Roy’s unique unorthodox style. However, it has to be noted that Toney wasn’t at his best.

Roy’s easy win over Thulani Malinga is up there with Canelo’s wins over Smith and Plant.

Andre’s win over Froch wasn’t close in my opinion. And Andre had a double fractured hand going into the fight. He faded down the stretch, but overall, he beat Carl pretty easily just with one hand. So that is a great win for me. Better than any what Canelo has had at the weight.

Prime RJJ smokes all of them at 168. He has toyed with James Toney and Eric Lucas. Both became great champions afterward.

While pissing hotter than a Bangkok chick boy ... we all know Jones was on some serious jungle juice.. freakish reflexes or not.. & Malinga had recently lost to Holmes, Benn & Eubank & was fluctuating in weight having come back from LHW when he fought Jones.. Wouldn't say its a great win.. hit & miss career.. Nardiello beat Malinga, in fact he frustrated him so much he resorted to repeated low blows.. Malinga was good, durable & on his day could mix it with anyone & yes he would go onto just edge Benn at the end of Benns career but i view him as a Pascal type fighter & not a great fighter. Good win none the less tho.

Yeah I agree with your sentiment on this. That’s why I can’t ever vote Calzaghe the best at 168 because all of his accomplishments can be matched by another guy who had the same long reign at the same exact time and they both retired undefeated. That is a stain on Calzaghe and Ottke and minimizes their reigns in my opinion.

My reason for not ranking Canelo above Ward and Froch is to no fault of his own. Simply put the guys of this era didnt build their own legacies before fighting him so theirs no true gage of how good they are. During Ward and Froch’s era we knew who was good and who wasn’t because all the guys fought each other. Imagine how horribly highly people would have been ranking Bute had he not fought Froch and just retired undefeated.

Callum Smith, BJS, Benavidez and Plant all held a SMW title at the same time and neither guy fought the other as they just all camped on their undefeated records in hopes of landing Canelo. So it’s not Canelo’s fault that they don’t have a legacy but it does hurt his resume compared to Ward and Froch.

One thing to consider regarding Ward / Froch / Kessler is that Ward's best wins @168 are unequivocally Kessler & Froch.

But Calzaghe already beat a prime, undefeated Kessler laying the blueprint for Ward (who ignored it in favour of headbutts and low blows)
Froch was beaten by an even more faded Kessler prior to be almost shutout by Ward.

Anyway you slice that it reflects better on Cazlaghe IMO.

I do agree with you on Zags and Ottke having so many defences each however - a disgrace that could happen, but we can easily see how that happened - Ottke never left germany, and he ggot some of the most egregious robberies - most notably Robin Reid, Byron Micthel & Charles Brewer all should have been facing Calzaghe in unifications fights.

So I can see why Warren & Zags wouldn't go to Germany either.

I think that every guy of that era took PEDS. I’m not condoning it, but it was the norm back then. Yes, it wasn’t a truly great win, but it was a very good win. The manner of victory made it a very good win. Nobody had an easy time with Malinga. Benn and Eubank had very tough fights with him. Even when he lost, they were close, competitive fights. He had some decent wins over Reid etc. He was very tough. Like you say, a Pascal type fighter. Yet Roy just coasted and then took him out with consummate ease. So looking at how tough he was for everyone else and how easy Roy made it look, IMHO, it’s a better win than the majority of Canelo’s at the weight.

Did Mike Mcallum fight at 168? He was certainly better than Canelo.

Don't forget that Clen won two world titles in one fell swoop against WBA champ Callum Smith who took the fight on short notice and had difficulty getting good sparring due to Covid restrictions. Clen's fairy godfather Mauricio decided to throw the vacant WBC title in the mix for his boy to win even though Smith didn't even deserve to contest his own title after getting his ass paddled in his previous fight for it by Juan Ryder.

And WBO champ BJS 2.0 had looked like crap at 168, winning the title against binman Shefat Isufi, going life-and-death against dog trainer Marcelo Esteban Coceres who IIRC most in the RBR had winning until BJS found the sequence of shots to stop him in round 11, and winning a UD against a shot Martin Murray.
