“Pace yourself” is a losing strategy, why do world class fall for this nonsense?

Agreed. The modern era's main advantage is basically advanced recovery methods. That's the only difference. Boxing has regressed, simply because these guys don't fight/spar enough to stay in shape. Too much supplemental conditioning instead of boxing specific training. Fans also claim we have "better nutrition" now. Today's food doesn't have nearly the amount of nutritional content it did 100 years ago.

This post reminds me of when my brother did amateur boxing. Everyone would say its just 3 2 minute rounds go all out non stop. Those of us who have even sparred at least know that one round will have you winded when you’re out of shape or obese like most of us are. Now Imagine 12 rounds being over 40 against the best guy in the division.

Don't forget modern nutrition. All the old fighter had to eat was natural food as it was meant to be eaten. You know organic food. Funny how today's fighters don't eat more organic foods.

I think it's more precaution than gameplan if that makes any sense. Maybe it was a more practical method of operating in the 15 round era, where if you fell behind early there was more time to catch up and more a of struggle to finish fights strong I imagine. But I want to say most guys who do this in the modern era do it out of necessity.

Capitalism has always ruled. Don't be fooled into thinking the food was much better back then. It's just now there's a spotlight on everything.

It's hilarious that so many morons still refuse to realize that Alvarez was pummeling Golovkin into backing off and not engaging.

Food safety standards now keep most pathogens out of food, so it is healthier. We have better refrigeration and safe handling protocols, which makes food much healthier. We have a wider variety of choices so we can balance our diet better. We have supplements and other healthy options. We have more high carb sugary snacks than ever before, but on the whole, food is much better and healthier today.

Wanna see a good example of one pacing himself go to Bernard Hopkins career at LHW. How it works and the end results depend on the type of opponent. Jean Pascal was wild and swung for the fences almost every punch so he gassed the second half. Chad Dawson and Kovalev were a little more reserved behind their jabs and both dominated B Hop.

Older skilled fighters employ this tactic mainly because while the skills are still there they can’t maintain a fast pace for an entire fight.

Golovkin didn't do any pacing of himself. He just simply didn't come to win. Different story. Fixed fight

    very true.
some of these guys supposedly have 12 or more weeks training with experts specialist in strength & conditioning. & cannot even go 12 round at good pace!

boxers in 1970s can go 15 no problems & just train hard basic old school.

is the mentality more than anything
I believe today most the boxers are semi retired once they crack the rankings. they want 1 or 2 fights a year & overpaid for it. they don't fight often enough to develop mindset
they are great athletes but not full time fighters
