    Joyce> 1988 Holmes and Tubbs 100%

People get too attached to name value, forget the reality of the fighter in any given year.

I actually see Joyce going the distance. Joyce is too basic and hittable but his chin and heart will carry him thru.

I think it would look like Margarito-Mosely with Joyce eating too many clean shots.

Let me guess, 185lb Marciano also beats Joyce?

Mike Tyson was getting battered by James Douglas. Joyce is much better than James Douglas. Much tougher, much larger and longer. Much fitter. Has heavier hands. Much more determined is Joyce. Douglas had faster hands, but that's about it, and he absolutely battered Tyson. Incredibly overrated.

Good god. Douglas was an elite level mover with fast hands.

Joyce cannot move like Douglas. Too slow. He cannot put together the quick 4-6 punch combinations like Douglas. His heavier hands don't matter. Razor Ruddock had heavier hands than Joyce but that didn't matter either.

No. But you cannot compare Tyson and Marciano. Tyson was 30 lbs heavier and much much faster. Generally small heavyweights struggle to get inside the jab of much larger heavies. Tyson had lightning fast feet. Marcino didn't. Tyson could put together powerful 5-6 punch combinations in 2-3 seconds. Marciano couldn't.

And Tyson stopped bigger guys - Golota, Bruno, Ruddock 1, etc. Marciano hardly ever fought guys that big and strong.

We have had these same debates about size forever. Before Joshua-Usyk 1, lots of people on this general forum were claiming that Usyk was too small. Then Usyk dominates Joshua and people here start coming up with more absurd excuses.

Tyson is too fast for Joyce. Joyce will struggle to land on a bobbing weaving target. Tyson will outspeed him with ease and once Tyson lands a quick 5-6 punch combination, Joyce won't know what hit him.

Bad match up for Joe here. Tyson UD 12 or late tko.

So? That doesn’t make Douglas better than Joyce. That’s laughable. Joyce would wear Douglas down and toy with him like a little brother.

Ruddock did not have heavier hands than Joyce. Not even close. Joyce has incredible easy power.

It does not matter if Joyce could beat Douglas. Joyce couldn't frustrate Tyson and stay away from his attacks like Buster could. He doesn't have nearly the footspeed and handspeed to do so.

Ruddock does have heavier hands than Joyce. In fact, his left uppercut is singularly a bigger punch than anything Joyce has. I bet if you were to do a poll even in this forum (which tends to lean in favour of modern fighters), majority will say Ruddock hit harder.

Joyce's biggest issue here is how Tyson used his opponent's attacks to set up his own. As punches were thrown at him, he was moving forwards, not back as most boxers would, rolling under jabs and 1-2s, with the peekaboo defence, constant head movement and movement from the waist. All of this engrained in his muscle memory by the relentless training methods of D'Amato.

Once under the punches and having closed the range somewhat, he negated his lack of height and reach with powerful leaping left hooks set up by fast feet. Leaping in with his hooks finally got him close enough to unload powerful combinations at a range which suited the shorter fighter. Because of all this, and in his physical prime, he was pretty hard to tag. Joyce's lack of mobility and his lack of a snappy jab akin to Douglas's (Joe 'paws' powerfully with his) makes him vulnerable to this blueprint.

There's no chance Tyson could keep this up for 12 rounds vs Joyce but he'd probably not need to...

People also need to consider how hard Tyson was to hit. If your only reference is the Douglas fight (a fight in which Tyson was not properly utilizing head movement and where he was trying to be a one punch slugger), then you are simply not honest.

It is extremely difficult for guys 6'5 and above to land cleanly on a peak 85-88 Tyson. Tyson was 5'10 fighting out of a crouch. Tyson's feet were incredibly fast. Big guys had to bend low to hit him which is energy consuming. On top of that he had very quick feet making him even harder to nail cleanly. And by bending low, you are losing power as a big guy while simultaneously getting into Tyson's punching range.

If you attack and miss Tyson, you will be countered by a lighting quick 5-6 punch combination. No heavyweight today throws with the handspeed of a young Tyson. We saw how clueless Joshua was when Usyk nailed him with some quick combos. Now imagine much quicker combos with much greater power.

Joyce simply hasn't fought anyone who could make him miss like a young Tyson and who could work his body consistently. He would struggle to land cleanly on Mike and once he gets nailed by quick combo's, it will only make life harder.

Tyson is a nightmare for big strong slow heavies. He is built to destroy exactly such fighters. I can see people favouring a quick big man like Fury over Tyson. But Tyson would eat up any big and slow heavyweight like Foreman ate hamburgers.

Tyson’s power is overrated and he didn’t carry it late. Joyce could go 20 rounds at pace. He would mangle Tyson and make him spit out his dummy.

Not at all. The threads which pit x against y elicit the fanboys of other current boxers who always side with the past boxer. And this is a forum which is vast majority American. Also most make as much sense as you are now which is not much

Joyce is a genuine 6’6”, has about 30kg on Tyson, has a much better chin, much better stamina, has a thudding jab, incredible heart, perfect temperament and is an intelligent guy. Tyson would be totally nullified. A boy vs a man.
