Calaghe is the greatest SMW of all time, is he the best? Maybe or maybe not, but it's fairly clear he's the greatest. Toney's reign wasn't long enough, Roy was barely at SMW, Ward had the highest peak but he abdicated his position far earlier than he should've.

As an aside, I don't like how Charles Brewer always gets left out of the SMW conversation. He was a real tough nosed Philly fighter

Brewer is one of Zags more underrated wins - and alongside Byron Mitchell & Robin Reid suffered really bad decisions against Ottke in Germany, though Brewer arguably had TWO decisions go againts him - both splits

If Canelo beats Benavidez he's clearly the greatest super middleweight ever

Would have a far better resume than Calzaghe at SMW

 

I like the look of Benavidas, and I really hope that the fight happens. But even if he won, I don’t think it’s enough to swing it in his favour.

Benavidas hasn’t beaten any real quality opposition. This current SMW division is quite weak.

Maybe if he did win, and Benavidas went on to achieve other things, it may be rated higher down the line. But that’s a lot of ‘ifs’

It’s the same with a guy like Plant too.

The Plant win could age better depending on what he goes on to achieve.

The win over GGG was good, but it was GGG’s first fight at the weight, and he’s obviously old for a fighter, and way past his best.

I’ve always been a big critic of Joe, but if you think that wins over Smith, Plant, GGG are very valuable, then you have to also highly rate wins over Lacy, Kessler and Reid etc too.

After that, you’re looking at title defences and H2H ability, with the latter only being based on opinion.

This always stirs up an interesting debate, but in terms of H2H ability, IMHO, you’re looking at RJJ, Toney, Ward and Joe.

If it’s a mixture of H2H ability and accomplishments, then at the moment, it has to be Joe.

 

Interestingly Calzaghe says Brewer is the hardest puncher he ever fought as well.. that's a quality fight that, although Calzaghe was always a step ahead of him.. it just shows how many dimensions Calzaghe had that even though he was a brilliant boxer he would go to toe as well & didn't need to resort to dry hump his opponent like Ward.. Brewer like many of Joe's opponents had beaten Otke too.. clearly imo
