And guys like Rob Gronkowski & Dwight Howard are absolutely enormous. They wound up & could not throw as hard as this skinny untrained singer? :risas3:
We should be deeply suspect of any of these measurements.

Buddy once told a story that when Max first started pulling his plonker, his plonker wrote the governor for a pardon. He was a strong guy. No need to compare him to those other guys. There are a lot of strong guys like that.

Baer didn`t have many one punch KO`s.

It was mentioned earlier in the thread that there were at least 3 opponents common to Baer and Louis who claimed Baer hit harder but none of the opponents were named.

I’ll try and check but does anyone know who those opponents might be? Galento for one maybe?

I know Louis’ technique and delivery system was light years removed from Baer’s but I still find it a bit hard to believe.

Louis saw off so many reputable chins including those belonging to never before KD’d or KO’d opposition - Max Baer himself constituting as a prime example.

I don’t think Max’s right hand would’ve yielded such an effect (as compared to that which Louis yielded) on his own (Max’s) chin.

Louis’ powers shots in their own single right against Carnera looked far more damaging than those of Baer vs Da Preem.

At any rate, Primo was a sucker for the overhand right vs both Baer and Louis. Credit to the Big Italian for his courage.

Well, in all possibility, throwing a single shot for all your worth might approximate to the “impact” force of a punch thrown on average by a pro - repeat, “might”.

But obviously, the pro boxer is throwing his shots within all the context of a boxing match around him - playing defence, being on the move, only throwing with enough commitment to still allow for retention of balance and recoil back to defensive form (hands and feet).

It seems obvious those machines don’t measure force.

Rather, they measure a change in velocity, whatever the acceleration rate is from from the zero quantity of the static speed bag.

That’s why a non punch impact (slap) can still yield a high score - it’s about about the snap of the bag and the speed of the snap.

    Just a fun arcade machine.

I had a mate score high on one of those arcade HAMMER machines.

The high score had him waxing on about how digging trenches gave him extra strength in the forearms (which were good size) , etc, etc.

The machine got him by the short and curlies, hook, line and sinker. Major ego tap. Hehe.

Could he replicate his high score? LOL, no. As many more gos as he had thereafter, he couldn’t even manage 1/2 of the best score he achieved in the first instance.

He quietened down a bit on all that “trench” digging talk. Haha.

This thread is wild! People opining that Max Baer had amazing power but not providing any support!

I realize he came from a different time when boats were made of wood and men were made of steel but give it a rest!

He had 15 1st round KOs in his career, I think it's reasonable to assume some of them were one punch KOs.

Baer put iron chinned Tommy Farr on the canvas and Joe Louis didn't even put a dent in the Stony Dandy from Tonypandy*

*apart from a broken nose with Louis' first punch and 4 cuts.

    Hahaha yeah that's him.
One of the things I've always loved about Joe Louis is how he was on very friendly terms with his ex opponents including Max Schmeling, Tommy Farr, Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles, Rocky Marciano and even Tony Galento.
Also future champs Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier idolised him

Easily manhandled physically by Carnera, Louis, Lou Nova. Couldn't impose his physical advantages over Schmeling, Galento, Braddock.
To me Baer is a bit like Wilder, elite punching power but not so strong for their size.

Did u watch the Carnera fight? Max manhandled him. Absolutely destroyed him.
He beat Galento who did outweigh him considerably and he did beat a very good Schmeling. Not sure what else you’d like of him. He was old got Nova and honestly he gave up after winning the title. He was a poor trainer prior but after winning he’d rather be out drinking and womanizing. That’s on him.
