Tyrone Spong is a former elite kickboxer who made the switch to boxing because of a shin injury. He was scheduled to fight Oleksandr Usyk on October 12th, but that fight did not take place because of adverse finding in Spong's drug test. On fightday, VADA reported that Spong tested negative for all prohibited substances and was allowed to participate in the fight, but Eddie Hearn replaced him with Chazz Witherspoon. Tyrone has defeated all his opponents with KO, except Ytalo Perea. Spong was heavily dominating this match until he broke his right hand in the third round. He continued to fight and got the Decision in a tough match (with barely using his injured hand). Spong is relatively untested at top level (in boxing). He hasn't had a worthy opponent yet, but I believe Tyrone Spong is a major threat to the top heavyweights. He just hasn't had the opportunity to prove himself yet. That's why I think Spong deserves better opponents, to show he can handle that level of boxing. If you've never seen him fight before, I recommend you to watch his fights on youtube. He's a real fighter with great punching power. A legend in kickboxing. I've heard there are negotiations about a fight with Martin Bakole. He's also a heavy hitter, so that could be a great fight. Martin Bakole is also looking for better opponents, so this is a good opportunity for both gentlemen to put themselves in the spotlight. The winner will definitely qualify for a fight with the top 15 of the division. What do you guys think of this?
I'm in two minds. My first is nah **** him, sick of boxers pissing dirty walking straight back into meaningful fights. My second is basically that whole division has pissed dirty at some point and he's an interesting addition to the fold. Do I want to be moralistic or entertained? The latter, usually. Get the fight made.
So was he proven to be guilty or innocent because It cost me a trip to Chicago Usyk vs Spong was the perfect fight for Aydamn it was just meant to be before it ended up being not meant to be Im like spongs biggest fan, but Bakole might be too much because styles make fights... I reckon Spong would have been more effective against Usyk but we’ll see
Bakole will knock him out. I've been following Spong for well over 10 years and while very skilled he is definitely chinny. Has the skills but not the durability to be a HW contender. Hope I'm wrong though.
Bakole ain't all that. A few people are blowing smoke up his arse but he is average. This fight could go either way. Bakole completely folded in the Hunter fight. If he gets in trouble it will happen again.
He ain't chinny, you ain't been following jack son. Does being hit by mike tyson make you chinny? No you just got hit by a god damn beast. Spong been rattled by beasts like Gokhan saki... no shame in that...Gokhan who also KOd solid chin Hrgovic types like Daniel Ghita Give me a break man... if you're gonna say you followed for 10 years have something to show for it. He has shared the ring with 265 pound, hard hitting, seasoned fighters like Overeem and Le Banner WHILE they were on roids and didn't get KOd. And Spong aint even a proper HW, he came up from like 170.
Listen man. I'm as big of an old school K-1 fan as anyone on here as @IntentionalButt will attest to. But Spong simply lacks the durability to be a top contender. Much like a lot of other great HW kickboxers of the past and present. Spong didn't get knocked out much in kickboxing because of his skills and IQ, not because of his chin. I'd say by kickboxing standards his chin was OK but not for HW boxing.
