I know this suggestion is coming way too late in the game, but personally, I really wish an exception to the 2000 retirement rule was set in place. Something along the lines of grandfathering in exemptions for careers that began before 1980, or even 1990.

Omitting guys like Duran, Holmes, and even Bernard simply feels wrong to me.

To be fair if Holyfield was a normal sane human he would've retired at the end of 1999 and not freaking 2014.

They'll all be inducted. But not until they become valid.

As to the introduction of new rules - a few people are really struggling with the simple rules in place!

I have included John L Sullivan in my choice at heavyweight, based on his entire career. However, I have assumed that this includes his bare-knuckle fights, not just his gloved contests. Is this assumption correct, or should we be ignoring fights without gloves in our considerations?

No, he's on the list, you can decide whether or not he belongs in the HoF.

So am I understanding correctly here? Bernard Hopkins won't be eligible until the year 2039?

I wonder if we could have a bonus thread at the end of the divisional votes and vote for those that missed the cut technically but only because they hung around forever or took a single meaningless fight past the cut off. Those that had the vast majority or even all of their best work done prior to the cutoff.

You could list around 20-25 and vote down to say, 8 to match the original division amount (this lot wouldn't be weight based but thrown in together) and keep the added numbers pretty light.

Heavyweight might be a voting problem as the forum is massively heavyweight skewed and there would be some BIG names in the mix i.e. Holmes, Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson. As it stands our most recent HOF heavyweights were past peak by 1975 which is almost half a century ago.

We could cut it to only 2 heavyweights allowed (separate vote) and 6 from the other divisions.

It could be a one off for the inaugural inductees.

This would be guys like -

    Tyson
    Lewis
    Holmes
    Holyfield
    Whitaker
    Toney
    Jones Jr
    Hearns
    Whitaker
    Oscar and co
    Fenech
    Nelson
    Lopez

    etc

If anyone is interested in writing a very very very short profile (to template) for the HoF, start thinking about it. I might start a new thread or I might run it in this one. I'm not quite sure how i'm going to work this yet, it could be a little convuloted and complicated but obviously it needs to be right.

I'll pick up the balance and I understand that means I'll be doing most of it, but it would be nice to have folks included where they are interested. It wouldn't be difficult because it would be short and facts-led, and I would be a brutal editor  so don't be put off because it's not your thing.

I understand both yours and @Rumsfeld's frustration over this.

But try to think of it as spending it all in one place.

What I mean by that is - won't it be fun to induct Oscar and Lopez and Whitaker when their time comes? Nothing lasts forever and that includes this forum by why not leave these tasty treats for future posters?
