Which fighters that either didn't fight at cruiserweight or spent very little time there do you think would be terrific/atg level fighters at that weight? I think Michael Moorer would be a wonderful cruiser. He was an enormous light-heavy and at cruiserweight, he would be in his natural weight with lots of power and speed. His durability wouldn't be an issue because he wouldn't be fighting 230+ pound monsters like Foreman. Before the division officially began, there are lots of names. Jerry Quarry obviously stands out among the contenders who never won a HW title in that he had terrific counter punching ability, skill, heart and the ability to beat big punchers like Lyle and Shavers. I think Quarry would make a very good cruiser. Goes without saying that Louis, Marciano, Dempsey, Tunney, Langford and Schmeling would all excel there. But since the division officially began, i would put Moorer at the top of my list.
Both Joe Louis and Sonny Liston would be cruiserweights if they fought today for at least the majority of their careers.
Can you imagine such as Liston being a cruiser in the 1980 s?? A fight between him and the young Holyfield!!
Exactly. the more Realistic way to look at it is, MOST of the S-MWs & L-HWs of Today, would be HEAVYWEIGHTS in Joe Louis Era... That's the eye opening Reality, that, well, that kinda changes things, doesn't it!!!
Louis best weight was about 205lb but when he destroyed Max Baer as a 19 year old he was only 197lbs. Baer could have had 5 arms that night and the cat like Bomber would still have battered him. I'm not sure about Liston being under 200lbs thougb
For the majority of Liston's career he fought around 215. That's about the average in ring weight of today's cruiserweight.
It is but they only have to weight that the day before. On fight night, most fighters weight between 10 to 15 pounds more. Some guys are even 20 pounds plus.
Louis got married later that day and was as calm as a mill pond. I was an amateur boxer at 19/20 and fighting 3 × 2 minutes round for a trophy or cup
