    Robinson and Leonard of course.

Not so much a hypothetical head to head but more a comparison of their various skills. Name the Sugar Ray that you consider to have the edge in the following attributes -

    Power
    Defense
    Handspeed
    Footwork
    Footspeed
    Chin
    Ring generalship

    Power - Robinson
    Defense - Robinson (Close)
    Hand speed - Leonard
Footwork/Footspeed - Sort of different - Footwork - Robinson, Foot speed - Leonard
    Chin - Robinson
    Ring generalship - Leonard

Hello there. I agree that footspeed and footwork are slightly different so I've amended categories accordingly. Thanks Fogger.

I personally prefer Sugar Ray Leonard his heart and array of skills are all there , I think he had an distinct advantage coming after Muhammad Ali and he had much better overall showmanship as well as the achievements as an amateur winning an Olympic Gold Medal.

    Power - Robinson
    Defense - Leonard
    Hand speed - Leonard
    Footwork-Robinson
    Footspeed - Leonard
    Chin - Robinson
    Ring generalship - Leonard

Head to Head at 147lb or 154lb I favour Leonard's handspeed over Robinson's power.
At 160 I'd go with Robinsom who was flattening middleweights whilst weighing 150lbs.

I've thought for a long time that the Leonard-Robinson matchup at their welterweight primes may be the best bout you could make. I say that from the point of view of two fighters who had complete games. They had power, speed, intelligence and showmanship. They could both fight off the front or back foot. They could move from defense to offense in a heartbeat.

The one thing Leonard had that I don't know if Robby had was killer instinct. I'm not saying Robinson didn't have it. I honestly don't know. I just know that Leonard could sense when his opponent was hurt faster than other boxers, fans or announcers and if he hurt you he was all over you until it was over.

Robinson ran out of opposition at welterweight and his friend Joe Louis always chided him for carrying opponents.
And of course Robinson was involved in a ring fatality.
Leonard never knocked out a middleweight with the chin of a Gene Fullmer.

An absolute dream match up indeed. The two best welters of all time.

Howard Cossell fawned over him from the off.

True he could be a bit of a sycophant sometimes. I think he stopped commentating on fights after what he considered a travesty with Alexis Alleguro and Aaron Pryor in regards to Alleguro having eyes issues.

I think it was actually after the Larry Holmes-Randy Cobb fight.

Yes you're right I think Randy Cobb said something like " you should thank me that I rid boxing of Howard Cossell". I know Cossell didn't want Alexis Arguello fighting Aaron Pryor because of his detached retina so could have probably also attributed to him quitting.
