Moore by close decision btw. Toney's resume can be picked apart (as can any) but he was still one hell of a fighter.

Bumping this old thread as I wanted to get people’s views on this. We’re talking Toney at 168 and Moore at 175. Size-wise, although Moore probably had a naturally bigger frame, I don’t think there’d be much of a weight difference when they entered the ring.

    Does Toney have a chance?

I think if Toney had his 37 year old ring IQ with his 27 year old body this would be close to 50/50 with a slight edge to Moore. Since that is not a real scenario I have to go with the Ol' Mongoose who would have been too wily for Lights Out.

Moore at his best is just a bit better. Tony would enjoy a chess match like this but he's up against a Grandmaster right here. Moore would control the pace and make sure he stayed ahead with workrate, skill and poise. Moore has too much power and accuracy for Toney's later attempts to reel in the deficit.

Great fight. Very close but I would give a slight edge to Moore.

Both were slick. Toney was the better technician for sure. Moore had the better ring generalship and power.

I'll take Moore all day. He'd teach James a lesson.

I wouldn't even say Toney was a better technician personally. Moore was better in all the ways that count in boxing he did everything to deliver the big punch and everything was tailored to the purpose of delivery in ways I don't see from Toney.

I meant punching technique. Especially on the insight Toney was the better technician.

I did not know that Toney was a pro for 29 years.
Although Moore was much more active, & Toney seemed to use steroids to get to become bigger as a fat HW.
Moore was greater, but I could see Toney taking maybe 3 out of 10 at his peak.

Wait. Let me clear this up you think Toney had better technique and was better on the inside?

Yes, Toney was the superior technician especially on the insight.

The short punches on the inside from Toney, I have never seen Archie put punches together like that. Just superb technique which takes a lot of hard work in the gym.

I’ll go with Moore by decision because he was clearly the better fighter at the higher weights. Toney goes the distance however. That I’m fairly confident of
