Pernell Whitaker vs. Ken Buchanan At LW

Buchanan was a solid fighter, but Whitaker has too much of everything and just had a difficult style for most fighters to solve. Straight up style doesn't work against Pernell unless you are really tall, have very fast hands and a big punch, and even then it's not easy. Whitaker takes almost all the rounds and wins unanimously.

 

I have to agree with the consensus that Whitaker would take a decision , styles make fights and I don't think Ken's style would benefit against Sweet Pea, he'd have to apply pressure . I'd say somewhere along the lines of a 115-112 win. Ole Kenny ain't an easy out for any lightweight.

 

I'll probably go along with the consensus that Pea would win but he'd have to be on his A game.
Buchanan has one of the most beautiful jabs ever seen and could hook off it quickly with plenty of power.He also had a granite chin and had bottle by the bucket full.

 

Like many first-rate Whitaker opponents, Buchanan has a bit of early success but Pea adjusts as he always did and runs the tables after about the fifth or sixth. A game effort from the Scot, and a clear decision for Whitaker.

 

A nice bump by Fergy, not often virtually all of us are singing from the same songbook.

Buchanan was great but Whitaker is just on another level here. Buchanan’s jab helps him early on and makes a good effort but Whitaker’s versatility and defense will come in to play where he outboxes Buchanan and win via decision 8-4.
