Some of the heavyweights who are seeking a fight (or scheduled heavyweights who are seeking an opponent) right now: Ivan Dychko Sergey Kuzmin Bakhodir Jalolov Martin Bakole Otto Wallin Stephan Shaw Michael Hunter Filip Hrgovic Arslanbek Makhmudov Ali Eren Demirezen Zhilei Zhang Simon Kean Charles Martin Efe Ajagba Agit Kabayel Jonathan Rice Oleksandr Zakhozhyi Viktor Vykhryst Gerald Washington Come on promoters and managers, stop being so lazy and get to work!
Look, I love your passion for Australian boxing and how you'll always back them all the way, but there is no way Opelu beats Hrgovic haha and I like Opelu too, a good solid journeyman who will hopefully get some good fights for future prospects, but Hrgovic is far too good for Opelu.
Result - Faiga "Django" Opelu (15-3-1) KO 4 Hemi Ahio (now 19-1). Some have suggested it was an early stoppage, but given Django was paying $8.50 for the win, the Sandman's view is that the stoppage didn't come soon enough. I also don't think a bloke who was spitting out the mouth guard to get extra rest should be complaining about an early stoppage. Spitting the mouth guard out sends a message to the ref that you've had enough. Django is on the lookout for his next opponent. Preferably someone with an '0' to steal. Astute judges on this forum (not myself) have described Django as reminding them of David Tua. We can only hope.
Doubt small shows draw much of an audience anymore, thus making it harder to get fights. Never hear of any casino's in the upper midwest having shows for years now.
Well, he is only two losses away from matching Tua. No decent wins yet though, miles from Tua in that category.
He won every round against Lucas Browne until Big Daddy dropped the hammer in the 7th. He lost every round against Justis Huni but made them all competitive until fading. His only other loss was against a bloke with a decent amateur background early in his career. I think Hemi Ahio was a decent win. If you go in as an $8.50 underdog against an undefeated fighter & finish in front, it's a decent win.
Pretty criminal how Browne has robbed of the chance to fight Dubois after two back to back upsets. The BBBofC is a total joke. Outside of Joyce he would easily be the best and most dangerous opponent Dubois has faced thus far. I've been pretty big critic of Browne in recent years due to his constant pulling out of fights, and some of his poor performances, but he's won me back as fan with his last two wins... Doesn't deserve the be shafted like this.
Mihai Nistor, 3:0 (3KOs) (#121), facing Fernando Rodrigo Simoes de Almeida (#292) on October 28th in Romania. Good to see Mihai back in the ring again! Johnny Fisher (#116) will face Dominik Musil (#438) on October 29th. Can't Fisher make just a slightly step-up again? lel!
Here is an interesting result that seems to have gone unnoticed on the Wilder v. Helenius undercard. The 30 year-old 6' 5" Jame Evans (5-0-1) defeated the 25 year-old 6' 4" Geovany Bruzon (7-2-0) by Rd3 TKO. Evans let his hands go in the 3rd round and unleashed a barrage of heavy shots on Bruzon leaving the latter just about out on his feet before the ref. intervened. This is a good result for Evans because Bruzon managed to go the 8 round distance in a UD loss against Lenier Pero (who seems to be a very promising prospect) in a competitive fight that saw Bruzon undoubtedly win a couple rounds. With that performance, Evans' third round stoppage victory is impressive.
I think Hrgovic should count himself lucky that nature took it's inevitable course when he fought Zhang (i.e. that the latter, being older and not having great stamina eventually gassed) - but I think he's got more than enough to break down and stop Opelu. I think Opelu is decent and he produces entertaining fights - but he's kind of at the level of guys like Jerry Forrest or similar. Nothing too wrong with that. I had high hopes for Hemi - but I think he paid the price for not getting useful fights quickly enough in his career. If you scan through his CV, the best name on it is probably Ed Fountain. I think the stop was slightly early, but Ahio was definitely behind before it happened.
You can probably add Gerald Washington to that list because Malike Scott who trains him (!) said that Gerald is looking for another fight soon..
