All of those guys were in some outstanding fights regardless of how great or average some of them were.

the excitement and anticipation for a Tyson fight was there .. Hell your wad was already shot before the bell even went off .. the only question was .. did you have anymore left in the tank .... Everyone was anticipating him knocking someone's head off again
He was the most exciting fighter probably since ALI or Ray Leonard

Tyson literally filled stadiums and was a huge pay per view draw. Add in drama of the ear bite and what crazy thing he would say after the fight - combined with HBO buildups and stunning KO's - and you have the biggest draw in boxing history.

How could you not put him on the list?

 

Tyson, Brewster, Holyfield, Cooney, Sanders.

I dont care if Tyson was overratted .. I would probably agree with that but if you are talking excitement = skills level ?? I'd probably rank Larry Holmes, Louis , Frazier and Ali over your list if thats what you mean?

 

It all depends on what you find exciting and what you like.

To me he wasn’t exciting because with little variation, he had two fights — the quick overwhelming knockout (you could see most of those coming a mile away) and the 1-2-clinch (or allow himself to be clinched, which is basically the same thing) that he settle into (especially when he fought big guys).

I find neither of those terribly exciting. I mean I certainly respect how good he was, but watching his quick KOs isn’t much different than watching Tommy Morrison’s quick KOs … but Tommy had a vulnerability and got into more wars — you didn’t know if he’d pull it out or not and there was some drama and back-and-forth. With Tyson the quick KOs were just knowing he’d hit the guy early and it would be over.

With his fights like Mitch Green, Bonecrusher, Tucker, Ribalta … they’re pretty much the same fight. And every round is more or less the same.

So to me, Tyson was powerful but not terribly exciting.

Compare that to a lot of guys who got into toe-to-toe wars where you just didn’t know whether they’d overcome, those to me are exciting fighters: Holyfield is Exhibit A. He also often fought down to the level of his competition so those fights could be intriguing until he turned it on (and in a few cases he wasn’t able to … often enough to make all of those exciting fights because you just didn’t know). Or Wilder, who always seemed to be behind on the cards and then one bomb goes off … there’s an element of drama there that didn’t exist for me with Tyson’s fights.

It’s not a knock on Tyson, and certainly some people find an overwhelming puncher whacking guys out exciting — but I was very much around at the time and watched his fights and until Buster Douglas there wasn’t any drama … maybe a sliver of doubt that Michael Spinks was just awkward enough to trouble him IF he survived the early onslaught, but that didn’t happen. And you know it probably wouldn’t.

A guy can be a huge draw and not be exciting — Floyd Mayweather being a chief example. He set records for PPV revenue and such and his fights were full-blown events that casuals (even my mom, haha) knew were happening. But he wasn’t exactly a thriller.
