Which fighters do you think were the most chill and calm outside the ring? Fighters that you wouldn’t think were boxers unless you’d seen them fight. I’d say Wlad was definitely not an aggressive guy dispute his destructive style. In fact he was quite intelligent, he has a degree and can speak 5 languages.

Hugo Corro...if he had only felt like fighting a little in those last 5 rounds with Vito Antuofermo, he would have retained his title and would have returned to Argentina still the champion.

Joe Louis public persona was to present himself as passive in and out of the ring when he was preparing for a fight.

Inside the ring it might be Jess Willard.

He had killed a man in the ring, in a truly terrifying way.

He basically lost to Boer Rodel, because Rodel's manager told him that he had a weak heart, and Willard was terrified of killing him.

Obviously it was a double cross.

He once said that if the other guy wasn't hurting him, and he was winning on the cards, then he didn't see much point in trying to hurt him.

This man was basically the superheavyweight unicorn on paper.

He might just have had the power of Wlad, and the chin of Vitally, combined with god like endurance.

Yet still it didn't quite work out!

Ken Norton more or less stated that he wouldn’t damage an opponent more than was professionally necessary to win the fight.

I think he made that comment after his KO of Randy Stephens - Ken hit Stephens with a single left hook that had Randy instantly out on his feet - Ken could’ve laid on some more leather but didn’t, clearly understanding that his “job” was done.

Also check out Joe Frazier’s KD of Joe Bugner. I think it was a crashing left hook Joe landed. Bugner hung in the air long enough for several more damaging shots to be landed.

Frazier clearly held off, knowing Joe was going to fall anyway - albeit delayed by a second or two.

Damn, good call on Sean O'Grady. Hard to believe that guy was a fighter judging by his TV persona back was he was an announcer for USA's Tuesday Night Fights. Seemed like a polite, laid-back guy. Probably a lot of boxers who are that way, but O'Grady didn't even look the part...

Sean was great the time I met him.

Went to a Tuesday Night Fights show — couldn’t tell you who was fighting now, I attended a few of those — and I got there pretty much as soon as the gates opened (I’m the guy who sits through every prelim when I go to shows) and the TV crew was kind of standing around so I wandered over to meet O’Grady and say hi.

I had been to a Rolling Stones concert a few nights before and was wearing a shirt I got at the show and he asked me how the show was and went on about how many times he had seen the Stones and that he was catching them on that tour and wanted to know how it was … and from there we started talking about some of our favorite concerts (I can’t recall who else he had seen and liked). Almost nothing about boxing, other than me telling him how much I enjoyed watching him fight.

Great guy, and a very, very real guy.

Definitely. Muhammad Ali could have landed yet another superfast combination on a slow dropping George Foreman while the latter was floating down to the canvas in Kinshasa but Muhammad could see that his mission was accomplished. And not forgetting Ali calling the referee over to stop his second fight against Jerry Quarry.

That’s a great call Stevie. Foreman’s fall to the canvas was one of the more dramatic and visually affording descents - like a slow spiral, and we have the fantastic still photos showing Ali watching George crash while holding his left hand cocked - ready to unload but of course ultimately withheld.

Arturo Godoy wanted to carry on their fight after being stopped the second time they fought, but Joe didn't want to know.

    passive
    /ˈpasɪv/

accepting or allowing what happens or what others do, without active response or resistance.

How can Joe Frazier or Joe Louis be called passive?

passive would be boxer who falls over first sign of trouble. or does only the minimum to survive.

I strongly suspect this was the case in general with a lot of pros who had work to do. They just clocked in and did what needed to be done.

Would you prefer PEACEFUL or NON-COMBATIVE?

Passive in this case was qualified as being CHILL and CALM outside the ring.

Still doesn’t mean you’d f*ck with them - they would justifiably clobber you.

Look what passive Mikey T did to that idiot on the aircraft. Very restrained.

The guy came out of it with both ears intact. That’s as passive as it gets.

Anger management classes have served Mikey well.
