Although Carlos Monzon was not flashy or boastful, boxing was a business, his left jab was a stiff punch setting up his very paralyzing right hand and his counters to the body and head. Muhammad Ali in his early years had more of a speedy flicking type of left jab, it also set up his combos which were quick and a right hand that was plenty very devastating. Regardless of Monzon's weaknesses, it is hard to argue with a fighter who last lost a match on Oct 9 1964, he lost 3 fights in his career by decision, defeated the 3 men who defeated him, and 8 of the nine men he drew with. And Monzon went 82 fights in a row without a loss, was champion from Nov 7 1970 until he retired on August 29 1977, 14 title defense, retired as champion. Monzon had 61 KO's on his resume. Muhammad Ali was a three time World Heavyweight Champion, from Feb 25 1964 by defeating Sonny Liston by TKO 7, until he was stripped of his title after 9 title defenses on April 28 1967 for refusing induction into the military. Regained the title on Oct 30 1974 by defeating George Foreman by KO 8, he made 10 title defenses. Ali defeated Leon Spinks on Sept 15 1978 to regain the title for the third time, then retired. Both great fighters.

A great post Richard again .. and I will add if it wasnt for the Monzon great jab .. He is a fighter you probably would have never heard of him .. it was so important to his game that he established that distance ... . And he was one of the very best ever at measuring it ... Ali was extremely athletic ,, one of most ever ,, so he could get away via his movement and reflexes , a lot like Roy Jones did with things .. Yes his jab was exactly how you described ... but the Monzon jab was better ,, or at least more important

It’s presentation it doesn’t matter how it looks but Monzon was several leaps better as a boxer.

Ali`s jab was pretty sharp but not that powerful.

It was more powerful than a middleweight’s.

And Ali had a knack for cutting people up with that jab. It seemed sometimes like he had a razor in that glove. Or precisely targeting it repeatedly so it closed an opponent’s eye.

He was too big but do you think the light heavyweight Ali from the olympic final would have beaten Monzon? Do you think a prime Monzon could have done better in that final than Ali`s opponent?

Hearns had a morer powerful jab than Ali, Man, the sound of that snap on Hearns' left jab (O_O)! Even a strong-jawed champ like Hill had to feel those, geez...

Yeah but this thread is rather ridiculous, a heavyweight fighting a middleweight, was the author smoking something or just trying to instigate an argument? Life must be boring, Huh.

I didn't even know this thread was Ali vs Monzon. I thought It was just about comparing jab technique?

Just a bunch of haters. Racism or wasteful threads come in all forms. At least Monzon was not a cry baby accusing judges of scoring against him. You know whom I am speaking of, he retired as champion, 14 title defenses. I like being different, I am not a follower.
