How did Ray Mercer outjab Lennox Lewis despite giving up 7 inches of reach?

Lewis was KO'd by two mediocre opponents but he would be unbeatable today, okay.

 

Unfortunately, Mercer didn't always show up. But he did for the Lewis fight!

 

Exactly this. It's easy to underrate a fighter who showcases their skills inconsistently. Made a big difference for Gatti in the Ward rematch.

 

Lewis H2H is top 3 maybe 1. But beatable, but will win more against most.

Heavyweights are different breed!!

No one is unbearable at heavy.

Get destroyed by him, if he didn't blatantly duck Mercer.

 

Mercer would overpower Fury and ko him.

 

Lewis was in a bit of a transition phase of styles, still new to Emmanuel steward's training. I don't know that he outjabbed Lewis as such, he jabbed with Lewis in a lot of the exchanges which Lewis didn't like. One Lewis biggest weaknesses was that he struggled to fight off the back foot and pushing him out of his rhythm always got success.

 

Fury would do.a mock Larry Holmes.

If I need to break it down, and say mercer was a very inconsistent fighter, and Lewis wasn't on form on the night, and mercer was actually limited by his size in the new era of heavyweights. I will lance. Relaxing right now. Fury beats mercer. But I rate mercer as a thorough bred fighter.

 

Fury isn't a model of consistency himself.

 

Not to mention Fury hasn't faced anywhere near the quality of fighters Mercer did.

 

Timing..Dwight Muhammad ( Braxton) did it all the time...Mercer got robbed against Lewis IMO

 

That's why we are debating. If you and fencik are giving it to mercer based on that. Mercer was a tough SOB and legit skilled, but does he not get jabbed and grabbed by a Fury who has realised his worth. Usually shws dominate the since the 90s. I think Fury is above a well shot Holmes, even if you don't, I don't know why.
