So I've just read that the November issue of the Ring Magazine will be the last to be published. Obviously a form of it will still be out there on the Net, but as for the actual mag in the shops, no more. Sign of the Times but sad.
That form of media is really struggling, so it has done well to get to the Century (obviously, with a gap thirty odd years ago). I must confess, I have not brought it for twenty years, and if someone like me does not buy it anymore, then the market for it is really niche.
Well, that is not unexpected but it is sad. I buy a yearly subscription for my son and read it when he is done.
Like most boxing fans it seems, i haven't bought a boxing magazine in years. I used to buy The Ring every month and my mate at the boxing club used to give me his Boxing News after he'd read them. The Ring and Nat Fleischer were an institution but I suppose like British Motorcyles it's had it's day. Boxing News played it's part in removing the colour bar in British boxing alongside the post war Labour Gov't, I hope the paper survives. My attic is full of old boxing magazines and my favourite Ring Magazine is a British edition from December 69/January 70 with 12 or so pages paying respect to the late great Rocky Marciano. My favourite Boxing News is a June 1951 edition with a photo of Randy Turpin on the front and the headline 'Turpin's big chance' following the news that Jack Solomons had signed Sugar Ray Robinson to defend his world title against the Leamington Licker. Tickets sold out in hours btw
I used to look forward to getting to the newsagents and getting it off the shelves, back in the early 80 s, when I started reading it.
They were at my mum and dads till they threatened to throw them out. One of the boxing news has a photo of Alan Rudkin with his son, who's a member on here, and his younger brother. Our boxing club and some of us boxers get a brief mention in the amateur section in the boxing news. A pro I used to spar with gets a mention in the 'The Ring' oddities section (do you remember that?) he got into the ring at Liverpool Stadium, his corner man took his robe off......... whoops no trunks hahahaha I've just noticed the ring mag from dec 1969 on Ebay for $20.Mine isn't in great condition though.
Same here. Nat Fleischer was a doyen of the boxing world. I used to get The Ring at lunchtime near where I worked.I think there was only ever one magazine in the shop and I never had to order it. I started reading boxing news when I was delivering papers and got to read it before put it in the bag.At the time Big George Foreman was world champion, the first time round.
Years ago being Ring Magazine fighter of the year really meant something. Same with fight of the year, round of the year or bein recognises as the champion by the influential magazine.
