Ring Magazine Ending.

LOL. And there were certain points in fights you wanted to replay over and over.

It got so that when you fast forwarded or rewound -the tape would often stop at the replay point of its own volition.

My guess is that it created a kink in the tape - like a speed hump, causing the VCR to put the brakes on. LOL.

I remember Harry Carpenter interviewing a young Mike Tyson and the Brit was impressed with Tyson's knowledge of the history of boxing and in the UK too.
He knew of Ted kid Lewis, Jack kid Berg and Randy Turpin.
I was impressed too

 

Sad but not unexpected news.
As a kid in the early sixties my Dad who was a merchant seamen and ex boxer used to bring The Ring home with him from his trips away.
He’d leave then lying around and it was looking at them and the pictures which got me into boxing, I used to read it religiously.
I could name each champion and every top 10 contender of the original 8 weight divisions back then!
As an adult I subscribed to it religiously and have hundreds upstairs in the spare room the wife wants them gone but I’ll not let go.
I stopped receiving it when Golden Boy took over, what did it for me was when they started to feature a card girl of the month.
Now I admire a beautiful girl as much as the next fella, but in the Ring Magazine?
Nah.

 

<sneeze> K-Tel recorder selector. What a piece of cr*p that was. Ha!

It was supposed to automatically return to the vacant slot holder from where you selected your last record in order to replace it.

Like, that little piece of ingenious technology worked..never. LOL.

 

Was Ronco the other co. that sold absolute tat.

That’s is sad Fergy. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 80s where for a young boxing fan it was like a golden age for boxing magazines. My avatar actually shows the cover of the first Ring magazine that I read given to me by my brother. It was a 1983 issue previewing the Marvin Hagler/Roberto Duran fight as well as a fabulous Who’s Who feature which had a profile of all the current top 10 fighters in each division. Like I said, for me a golden age for boxing magazines with the likes of The Ring, Boxing Illustrated, World Boxing, KO magazine, Boxing Scene and Big Book of Boxing and I do miss the excitement and anticipation of waiting to get the latest issue as they were about to hit the newsstands. Lol

 

VHS tape, Fergy? I remember my uncle having a Betamax video machine. He said that the tapes were smaller and the recording quality was better than VHS but all I remember was the machine was like a massive concrete block and just as heavy.

 

I remember watching fight films on cine cameras in pubs and working mens clubs back in the 70's and the blokes running the films were fairly knowledgeable.
These same 8mm films were advertised in Ring Magazine along with Charles Atlas courses, air rifles and sea monkeys

 

Hahahaha they'll be the same ads.There was one for a gadget that went on your wrist and gave you big forearms.
I made one in metalwork and it didnt work.
