Sad to hear about this. I'm 25 and have a digital subscription, sadly the digital archive of past issues only goes to back to 2013 or so. I'd probably stay subscribed for the rest of my life if every issue ever published were made available digitally. That said, I look forward to having a collection of select print issues. Print media feels more substantial and um, healthier to consume, I suppose, in well.... print. There's a great feeling in having a physical object that you own and can do with as you please. Let's say the Ring no longer makes financial sense in any form, what happens to all the magazines I've been reading digitally? They go kaput, more than likely.
I can remember an ad with a girl pointing at a blokes stomach and saying "Either that bulge goes or I do" By today's standards his stomach wasn't that big.
Ring, Ko magazine, world boxing , and Boxing illustrated were the sources I had for years, in hind sight it was an enjoyable time waiting for those magazines to come out every month with commentary on the big fights and all the results from fights around the country that didn't get televised, the knowledgeable writers added to the enjoyment .Sad to see Ring go but so are newspapers, the reason is simple, the younger generation simply does not read anything , anything at all, everything is visual for them relayed to their phones or it doesn't exist. I believe it's also one of the reasons why younger fans dismiss older fighters, they have no knowledge of the history of the sport that Ring was fabulous at providing .
Sort of remember Ingo doing an advert about some sort of glue , was it Lock Tight ? the 60plus posters might know . stay safe guys.
I think the last one I bought in the newstand was round 2006. But if I closely followed current boxing I would at least loiter around the newstand and read it Probably wouldnt buy it though
I know it's iconic but I have not read it for about twenty five years ... it will still be on line so does it really matter ? Print is a dying format .. it does not make economic sense anymore ... my question is if it will still function as an entity or close it's doors all together ?
So sad to hear this. I've been a regular reader since 1966 when Ring Magazine sold for 50 cents for each monthly edition. Especially during my first year of college I looked forward to each new issue coming out. Each edition featured a good balance of interesting, well-written articles of fights and fighters of bygone days as well as current. I enjoyed Nat Fleiser's editorials and articles, as well as those of Sam Taub, Dan Daniel and the like. Even the wrestling articles in those late 60s mags were fun to read. I continued to buy Ring Magazine over the next couple decades. As it passed through a series of different editors and publishers it changed under the different management. I liked it best during the Fleischer years, It has been decades since I have read any boxing magazines I suppose like most things its time has passed, but I may see if I can purchase that last issue of Ring, if for no other reason than old time's sake.
Years ago I was reading an article in the Ring about Sugar Ray Leonard. He'd fought someone (down south maybe) early on in his pro career and he said someone had called him BOY !!! Being a Brit that meant absolutely nothing to me ??? Only a few years ago I was telling a woman that I used to love being called ''Kid" when I boxed. It was always just as i was getting into the ring or after I'd got out "good luck kid" or "good fight kid" It was years after reading that comment about Leonard that I realised what was meant. Before that kid and boy were the same thing
