Watch his fight with Max Baer. His hands look quick and he throws deadly accurate power combos.

Boxing as we know it has been around for approximately 125 years. 25 years is 1/5th, or about 20%. That's actually pretty significant

Louis had great attributes, and would have had mixed results in any era, pretty much like anyone else would have.

Then choose the best version of Ali.

Saying the last 25 years, only takes you to 1997, soon to be 1998.

He’d have had to have found Frazier first.

Has Wilder got any in-fighting skills?

These guys are everything that they accuse others of being.

They have no knowledge of Joe Louis.

    There it is !
    The best version of ALi...
    That's they one....that's they one !

Ok, take the best version of ALi. I did say "with one or two exceptions" cause I knew someone would pull Ali out they ***

Ok...you got me, you win....I concede the argument. Ali 60 to 67 beats every living soul who ever laced up. No question, no contest, no split series, no nothing. You win big dawg

I don’t care about your stats.

    25 years ago was 1997.

    Soon to be 1998.

There were MANY great HW’s before that period.

    Stop being stupid.

    It’s a H2H thread, Einstein.

Which is why people are picking the best versions of each fighter.

It’s why posters are typing things like ‘A Steward trained Lennox’

What do you want us to do?

Put forward the versions of Ali who fought Leon Spinks??

How about a post prison version of Mike?

How about an early 00’s version of Wlad etc?

Nobody has made those claims about Ali.

It’s you who is biased against him, because some posters have previously upset you.

Roy was a former MW who had one fight there.

    Fury??

    Holmes??

    Ha!

Roy's one fight was for a title, and he won hands down. He probably could have picked up wins against either Tyson or Toney had he stuck around.

Yes I added Patterson, I guess he's not modern though.

And yeah I think both Fury and Holmes had better footwork than Louis.

Which Louis fights do you recommend I watch that would change my mind ?

I understand about Roy. I’m Roy’s biggest fan. But that was almost 20 years ago, for one fight.

    Roy wasn’t a HW.

Fury has great mobility for his size.

You said hand speed and footwork.

You’re never going to watch a full fight of Joe’s. Let’s be honest here.

I’ll try and find you some clips. Or you can do so yourself. The last time I looked, there were more than a few clips showing his great attributes.

You have done him a great disservice.

    Yes, he had flaws.

Yes, he had stylistic issues with certain guys, and would have done against fighters from other eras too. But then so would everyone else. It applies to everyone. There’s no such thing as the perfect fighter, because there’s too many styles and sizes to overcome. Styles make fights. Which is why everyone has a stylistic nemesis.

However, Joe had very good hand speed, great technical skills and accuracy, and great 2 handed power. He was also a ruthless finisher.

He really is worth watching. I love the way he stalks the guy like a coiled predator, and way his movements are so precise and efficient. No extra movement, no flash, none of that.

I've watched everything I can find of Joe's on YouTube and listened to all the radio broadcasts I can find.
I love watching Louis fight, I have nothing bad to say about him. I do agree his hand speed was pretty decent and much more economical and accurate than most of his contemporaries. His foot speed was just never something that jumped out to me.
If anything, I do think he was good at cutting the ring, in a plodding kind of way.
I just always felt he was a bit flat footed from the clips of his I've seen.
And that's a general assessment. Most of the old guys seemed to fight that way, at least at HW. I think that's one of the main differences between modern vs old timers
