He was banking on Pacquiao showing slightly diminished punch resistance (through years of ring attrition) and the advantage of better filling out the 147 pound division. Marquez being the taller, stronger, bigger man could not even stun Pacquiao in the lower weights. And now at 40 years old hes punching holes through concrete walls. Great fighter, but clearly an enhanced and calculated gameplan to optimize his chances for a KO. Credit to him for executing though.

I don't think he could realistically have predicated his plans on Pacquiao's chin being diminished so much as belief in his own ability (his own chin had been through the wars, after all, and would have to be tested again for to enact his high-risk approach to IV). And I wouldn't say that either man fit welter particularly better than the other in terms of physicality, notwithstanding any bulk JMM put on (which has its cons).

JMM's strength training for that bout was tailored specifically to maximize his already considerable punch, he put himself in the jaws of the lion, was more intrepid and determined to hurt Manny than in any of their previous bouts, and it paid off. That is the story of their fourth encounter.

There isn't a need to mitigate or excuse Pacquiao's defeat in the face of taunts from detractors or rival fans, in my opinion. He's an all-time great, one of the (at worst) fifty greatest out of all the millions of men who ever put on gloves at some point in their lives, who went up against another all-time great and got knocked out in a tremendous technical firefight. There's absolutely no ignominy in that.

I picked Pac but if Loma could get on Manny’s special vitamins, maybe he’d have a shot. Also, Loma is a lot smaller than Pac. He is small for 135 and could make 126 without being drained. Manny couldn’t make 135 for a long time, even though his fans like to pretend otherwise. Prime Loma is a tough opponent for anyone at 130. He looked rusty in his last fight and much smaller than his opponent but I still think he will unify at 135.

Source that Pac couldnt make 135?

I always felt he didnt want to after fighting at welter. It looked like he needed to it a lot to even get near welter which is easier than cut especially when the money is there and boxing was his sidegig at a certain point.

But to me it always looked like he was a 135-140 lbs guy fighter punching above his weight.

In 2009 he looked pretty drained against Hatton at 138. You can pretend a 40 year old version could have been strong at 135 or even able to make the weight but I don’t think so. Loma is much smaller than late career Manny. Pac Man was an all time great IMO but he wasn’t fat at 147. Loma has to pack on weight to just hit 135 and should really be fighting at least one weight class lower. Look at the size difference in his past few fights. He’s got a small frame, short arms and doesn’t have big legs like Manny. In modern boxing which fighter not named Usyk is giving up this much size? So many weight bullies these days which makes the size difference Loma is giving up look absurd. He’s probably going to fight Haney next, a guy who looks like a middleweight. I love boxing and would rather see Loma fight guys his own size. It wouldn’t be as lucrative but we would be watching great fights based on boxing skill not weight management and manipulation.

    Pac runs him over.

126? Still Pac. That left will find Loma and he will feel it.

Its not like loma is obligated to face Pac. Sure they entertained it but so what if they refuse, they're campaigning in different division anyways.

If i remember correctly Sergio also entertained a fight with manny in 150. Obviously that didnt happen, so manny ducked sergio?
