Marvelous Marvin - was he ruined by John 'The Beast' Mugabi?

Yeah the punch he landed on Davey Boy Green was incredible.

 

Spot on. It was the amount of fights that he had that caused him to slow down, and age.

Well the Mugabi fight sure didn't make him any younger, let's just say that.

No. Mugabi was nothing special, Marv was basically out the door by then. He dug the acting and commercial side of things (was always jealous of Leonard) and just rode it out.

 

After the fight Hagler was going around the ring with his hand in the air and the right side of his face looked like he'd been in a car wreck. That was the most punishment I'd ever seen inflicted on Marvin . Mugabi did far more damage to Marvin than Hearns did and lasted 3 times as long. After this fight I think Marvin had slipped about 20 to 25% from his prime days when he absolutely dismantled Tony Sibson, Watch his sharp crisp combinations , slick footwork and movement and punches in that fight. Against Leonard he was slow ,lethargic and threw one punch at a time for half the fight, I said at the time Marvin looks like he's throwing punches underwater. One thing is a fact,,Ray Leonard saw the Mugabi fight and knew now was the time to take Hagler on. As seasoned boxing fans know, fighters age at different rates. Some are done in their early 30's while others can fight much later. I know of no knowledgeable fans who don't think that the Hagler who fought Leonard was a significantly diminished version of Hagler .

 

I agree with this 100% across the board.

That was a tough fight with Mugabi but I don't think it ruined him. The Leonard fight was right after and many thought he won that fight, so I don't see how he diminished at all leading into the superfight.

 

I think so....Mugabi was the harderst puncher at that time ( Pound for pound )

 

Hagler was beaten 1st at the negotiating table vs SRR (smaller ring, 12 rnds instead of a 15 rnd war, etc). Hagler also fought a tactically dumb fight. I still thought he won. Hagler caught up to Leonard by the 12th and probably only needed another rnd or 2 to stop him. Hagler early took his time thinking he would dismantle Leonard and take him apart by the late rounds. Leonard just fought a brilliant fight and the advantages he had negotiated were ultimately the difference..

I didnt see any evidence of Hagler being 'damaged' by Mugabe. Hagler was certainly tested, but certainly nothing landed that was 'career shortening'. Hell, not only did he not get KD, he never even got seriously hurt! Cant even say he was on 'q***r street' at any time. Many fighters take a lot more than Hagler did, and are fine afterwards. Especially when they win in so few rounds, whilst not getting visibly hurt. What impresses you I think, is Hargler was actually was tested for a few rounds, which shows just how dominant he actually was!

He couldnt beat the Vax however..

 

Marvin Hamlisch was actually the son-illegitimately- of Marvin Hagler and Mustafa Hamsho. A lot of people don't know that. How is it relevant to this thread? Well, Hamlisch was beaten up pretty severely by a man, a fella who you might recognize, a gentleman by the name of, oh, I don't know, JOHN MUGABI. It's a small world, a damn small world, maybe a damned sight too small of a world, if you ask me, some days. But I saw Mugabi beat that man, that Hamlisch, that modern miracle product of science, to within an inch of his life...and then I saw Mugabi damned near take that inch. And he would have too, if not for that meddling ref.

 

I saw the Hagler / Mugabi fight and when Marvin was interviewed afterward, he said he thought it might be time to retire and he said it with a very world weary attitude like that battle was just too much. Marvin was very tough and had a granite chin.....he took punishment that others might not have lasted through.
