Roy Jones Jr V Dwight Muhammed Qawi - Is there A Case For Either Man?

I think there is a case for both men. Tough fight to pick a winner. I’m leaning towards Jones by a narrow decision but not certain

That's true. Even the one big name he beat, Felix Trinidad, was more washed up than Roy and much smaller.

 

Tough. Qawi was a menace at 175. Only Spinks could beat him. Potshotting to a win wouldn't be on the table for Roy.

I don't normally disagree with anything you post but IMO there's not a snowflakes chance in hell Qawi gets beaten up or stopped. Qawi is one of the greatest H2H fighters at 175 in history. He's an absolute tank. He would pummell guys like Tarver.

Spinks and Futch pulled out all sorts of tactical masterstrokes to give them the optimal chance against Qawi. They even shelved some of spinks biggest strengths.

Jones is amazing at his best, even at 175, but he'd have to pull off something pretty special here. Qawi will be after him all night, he doesn't neglect the body, has all the punches in the book and is a very good technician to boot.

You can mount a case for either, absolutely. Qawi's got some good names on his resume at 175.

 

I respect your opinion and you make some very valid points. I feel the way I do because, in my opinion, Roy Jones is the best fighter whose career started since I've been born (1957). I think Qawi was a wonderful, tough as nails light heavy which is why I think he gets beat up. He is so fierce and hard to stop that Jones ends up hitting him a lot.

 

Qawi isn't just your usual come forward aggressive fighter though, he's defensively very sound with a great jab and excellent countering abilities. Along with his other great attributes being his chin and workrate, i don't think Jones ever fought anyone like Qawi at Light Heavyweight.

As @JohnThomas1 pointed out Spinks fought the best fight of his career to beat Qawi, with one of the best jabbing masterclasses for 7 rounds you'll ever see in any fight. And still Spinks had to dig pretty deep in the 2nd half of the fight, and still only won by like 3 or 4 rounds at the most. And were talking Michael Spinks here who is a top 5 Light Heavyweight of all time, and is H2H probably one of the hardest guys to ever beat at Light Heavyweight.

I can see your reasoning for Jones pot shotting Qawi on the outside using his speed to win a decision, but i'm sorry no way does Jones stop the Camden Buzzsaw. If anyone was to get stopped in this fight it would be Jones and only Jones IMO.

 

Fair enough. I just wanted to make sure you were totally up to speed with Qawi.

A Jones at his best is way too fast for Dwight and lets be honest Dwight has never encountered that type of speed.
15 rounds would favor Dwight but I just don't see him being able to catch Roy.

Had Qawi managed to find a way to win against Spinks, we’d probably be talking about him as an all-time top 10 light heavyweight. He was on a fantastic streak coming into that fight and it’s fights like the one he had against Spinks that can make a fighter’s legacy. It’s why everyone puts Spinks in their top 10 light heavies and often in their top 5. But Qawi was no lesser light heavyweight than Roy Jones, even if in overall terms Jones rates higher. It’s also part of the reason this fight is so tough to call.

 

And that was past peak Qawi at a higher weight (190 lbs)
