The kind of bloke who could strike a match on his chin.

Dokes was another who claimed 6’3” but clearly wasn’t. In the 70s a lot of HWs got rubber stamped as 6’3” without apparent consideration given to their true height. Announcers and so called experts keep mindlessly repeating that Fury is 6’9” when he clearly isn’t - prob more a true 6’7”. Fury himself even admitted one time “Yeah, I’m 6’7”.

Still freaking tall but some accuracy would be nice.

    Hahahahaha that's a cracker.
One of his ears looks like a boxing glove.

Great line. Sans script, Groucho was very sharp on his feet also. Well before my time but I’ve watched quite a number of episodes of Groucho’s series You Bet Your Life on YTube. Great television.

True but by the looks of him, you wouldn’t dare do it. Tom’s old tall ship tattoo was very cool also - though perhaps a tad distorted upon the old gob’s chest expansion.

    The humour never gets dated.
I remember my mum and dad houling with laughter watching Laurel and Hardy back in the 60's and it's still hilarious

Lol, misread on my part. Tom striking a match on his own chin, aha - sure, Tom shouldn’t have a problem with that. Haha.

Ted kid Lewis of more recent vintage was supposedly the first world champion to use a gum shield.
I doubt it was vanity because besides having 2 cauliflower ears and a flat nose, Ted also had very British teeth.

Wow, my Mum loved Laurel and Hardy too.

My Dad loved The Goons, something he listened to a lot when he was in the Navy late fifties to early sixties.

Now I knew of Monty Python before the Goons so we thought Cleese and co were so cool - mad as cut snakes. The new gen of comedy.

But then Dad introduced me to The Goons. As far as crazy goes, they were KINGS - all very nutty but particularly Spike Milligan who was bi-polar as it turned out.

Brilliant comedians and models for many comedians and comedy going forward.

    That’s an interesting factoid.

Apparently the old cauliflower ears remain painful for evermore - at least that’s what I’ve heard.

I don’t know if you follow Rugby League but Australian Great Arthur Beetson never wore a mouth guard for the better part of his career.

Toward the latter stages of his career he decided to pop in a gum shield for a particular game and having never worn one he did look odd - and during that very game he copped a broken jaw for the first time in his career.

    Unlucky or what? LOL.

I think you're right about the cauliflower ears and them being painful.
The old timers were told to cover their ears with milk and get leeches to suck the milk, and blood off, whether it worked I don't know.
By the time i boxed the laces were covered up and now of course they're velcroed.
I had half a tooth knocked out once when sparring without a gum shield.
I live in North West England where rugby league is played but I've never followed it that much.

Milligan was a genius although i was never into the Goons.Sellers and Bentine were brilliant too.
Sellers is distantly related to Daniel Mendoza and Benjamin Disraeli which is cool. His portrayal of a union leader was spot on and funny as **** and I say that as a socialist union member.
The life of Brian is the funniest film I've ever seen but has dated a bit

I am sure people said this already but Tyson Fury is 6'7 and was listed this when he turned pro. Gerry Cooney looked around 6'5 or slightly taller but was listed at 6'7. Nikolai Valuev was listed at 7'1 even though he looked to be around 6'9/6'10. Andy Ruiz is listed at 6'2 but looks to b around 6'0.
