Was Paulino Uzcudun one of the most durable heavy’s?

As far as we know he was only stopped once and that was by a rising Joe Louis in the LAST fight of his ( Uzcudun’s) career. Additionally he fought most of the biggest punchers of his time including Schmeling, M. Baer, Godfrey and Carnera and often in fifteen round fights. He even went TWENTY rounds once to beat Max Baer. Does Uzcudun’s chin size up to the best of them ?

 

I remember reading an article in Boxing Pictorial as a new fan that Joe Louis said he was the opponent he hit the hardest.

 

Never heard of this character but wow that’s a set of whiskers. What was his style like? Did he fight to last or win?

 

On top of his elite chin, Uzcudun was also very solid defensive fighter. He wasn't like Chuvalo, his style was much more sophisticated. Very good fighter at his best.

 

Never stopped or knocked off his feet till his last fight. One tough fella.

Schmeling was a good puncher not a great one. But you will say he knocked out Joe Louis so he must be a great puncher right? Joe Louis couldn't really take a punch and looked impressive because of his poor level of opposition. Primo Carnera had a lot KO's. Usually against extremely small guys who wouldn't be considered heavyweights anymore and Primo apparently fought tons of fights staged by the mob. Max Baer is considered to be great puncher because he "killed" a guy in the ring. A guy was damaged in his previous bout. Paulino did face and lose to Godfrey. Who said Godfrey landed his best punches against him? Paulino could of just ran and grabbed the whole fight. Since there is no footage then we can't know. Well there is a little footage of Paulino but none of the Godfrey fight.

 

Real toughnut. As has been said,a Chuvalo with a bit more skill on top.

 

Lol yeah I seen a few of your post and basically I can tell you are the type of "boxing" fan who will say any boxer from certain eras were better than other eras. Paulino wasn't sophisticated in terms of skills. By his era maybe but compared to heavyweights from the 60's and later? He was primitive.

George Chuvalo fought and beat far better fighters than the ones Paulino beat.

 

Not at all, I weigh eras similarily. I don't think one era is significantly stronger than the other one, because it's impossible to verify.

Like who exactly?

 

Yes is the short answer.

He is in a very elite class.

 

Uzcudun's best years were in the late '20s, after which he was seen more as a popular veteran; floating in and out of the rankings.

But, yes, he was as hard as a coffin nail and walked through fire in some bouts - most notably against Otto von Porat in early 1930, when he earned a 10-round points victory.
