I agree. This whole narrative about Ali doing a rope a dope is very exaggerated. He was out boxing George Foreman easily and was never losing at any point. Many slick boxers would've beaten George Foreman. The 2 he fought in his first career Ali and Young beat him.
As for Wilder, well he barely hit Ortiz in two fights either. It took him forever to find a home for a clean shot to get him out of there so it's not as if Fury had to be a defensive marvel not to get hit much against him as even Ortiz wasn't. Luis Ortiz is also a much better defensive fighter than George Foreman. Why can't you just admit that his defense was bad.?
Fury doesn't have Foremans chin so when he gets hit and dropped it's a lot more memorable. Foreman got hit more in the Lyle or Ali fight than Fury did in his whole career. Foremans defense wasn't underrated. It was terrible. You made an excuse for every single time Fury got nailed or looked bad "he had an off night, he got careless" etc. You are blatantly being hypocritical. IF Wilder could be considered to have excellent offense as defense, he should not have needed comeback knockdowns/knockouts against CRAP competition that were outboxing him. Offense as defense is not only throwing punches (and in DW's case sloppy, uneducated, off balance hail mary type junk). It's more subtle than that schoolyard type of fighting.
His defensive skills were generally good enough within the scope of his style, especially when viewed in the context of his other overall strengths and attributes.

You can't give excuses to Fury for having "off nights" or "being careless" but then give no excuses for Foreman. That's hypocrisy. Either both fighters get excuses or neither of them do. Foreman had plenty of valid excuses for the knockdowns he suffered (the intense heat in Zaire and Puerto Rico), but part of it was also his own fault for being overly aggressive and burning through his gas tank. The best defense is a good offense. When I used to watch the films of Big George whupping Frazier I thought he did it by shoving I always thought all Big George did was shove Joe out of range but as the video shows it was much more subtle. The best defense is a good offense.
