Honesty, I think barring a lucky punch from Cooney, Lewis would have made short work of him. Lennox who like cooney was a big man but one who could box, punch, take a punch and had good Stamina. He had an ATG trainer in his corner and regularly dispatched big men who were punchers. I like Gerry Cooney but this is a very bad match for him.

I agree. But against big men who were punchers it was usually the “seek and destroy “ method.

I mean if Cooney was confident and just went out and tried taking him to the sword he stands a chance at actually making some noise. He couldn’t do worse then Shannon Briggs, probably.

    Great post Mike!

Lewis did cop a lot of unfair flak during his career. It’s human nature for some to try and unjustly cut down those that rise above the heap - often classified as the Tall Poppy Syndrome.

Lennox did it HIS way and now look how he is viewed - the last laugh as they say.

And bang on, whatever his successes, he’s always been a credit to the sport.

I always liked his hybrid English/Jamaican accent and deliveries “Bring it on Maaahn, You Ain’t Nutt’n’ to me Chicken Bowe!” LOL.

Another thing that affected his acceptance and popularity in some quarters was the move away from England and eventual return. Over the years you see some that obviously couldn't get past that and open their arms while others to their credit did.

He could be arrogant and boastful but that's part of what makes the great's what they are - that unflagging self belief. Lennox had that in spades and some, particularly those looking to nitpick, clutched it close.

Great points, including the impact of the move away.

Lennox’s wasn’t always polished, rather, he could be quite blunt, in the same way Larry Holmes could be at times.

Suffice to say, # 1 arrogant ego and boxing orator, Ali got away with so much more for a lot less backlash. LOL.

Holmes could be salty and defensive at times. Probably the single biggest thing that harmed him in the eyes of the public -- he was otherwise a credit to the sport (other than the whole Berbick drop kick). No substance abuse problems, no police problems, no female problems, no money problems, no flashy stupid expenditures, etc.

    This.

I heard Berbick insulted Holmes' wife prior to the infamous dropkick lol. Hell, I'd have done it if someone insulted my missus. :boxing1

The Lewis who was pooping lightning bolts against Ruddock would have Cooney out in 1.

The more cautious Steward Lewis would have him done in 5.

To be fair Berbick was talking out of pocket about Holmes's wife, so I think Berbick had that drop kick coming.

Depends on Lennox ... he blasted out Golota but went five w Morrison, another guy you figure he would blast out .... funny to think that Lennox was essentially the same size as Cooney , an inch shorter but ten plus pounds heavier ..

Good points, and the credits he gains elsewhere far outweigh (or should) the occasions he wasn’t so PR conscious - but it speaks for itself that the fans heavily focus on and are influenced by the more superficial PR performances - so as to often allow a pass for fighters who are quite the pr*cks and hot messes otherwise.
