If he was floored why he did not got up fast but laying on the ropes? Because he was knocked cold, even people who were in the gym admitted that. "During one sparring session, he was reportedly knocked cold by Fresno punche."
Fresno? So you've abandoned your Ray Patterson story and you're back on Mac Foster again? I've already shown you a contemporary report that shows Liston wasn't "knocked cold" by Foster. Foster's own manager acknowledged that he was just down on one knee.
You heard from where? Give me the link, give me a video of either Quarry saying he beat Norton and Foreman in sparring or give me a link or video where Foreman and or Norton said Quarry beat them in sparring.
I am talking about Ray, and yes Ray knocked Liston cold according to Fresco. Liston was on his knees? Why the hell he is pictured down?
Quarry knocked Norton out in sparring at the Main St gym. That is a fact. They were, however, not regular sparring partners. There's some biography of Jerry Quarry available on Google Books. I took a look at it, and was very surprised to read that -- according to the author -- Quarry had once KO'd Ken Norton in sparring match. On another occasion, supposedly, Quarry floored Norton. The book didn't say when these incidents took place. But I assume the author meant the sparring happened in the early 1970s, or even late 1960s, when Quarry was at his peak and Norton was just starting his pro career. When you think about it, that's the only period in each guy's career when they would have made suitable sparring partners. Rumor has it the sparring session took place shortly after Foreman returned from the 1968 Olympics having won the gold medal. Quarry was much more seasoned at this time and beat young Foreman up a bit.
Any book of Liston that has info on the Foster n R. Patterson sparring bouts? If not then just a very solid Liston book recommendation? Was thinking about getting "Liston and Ali" as well as "King of the World". If those r good enough that's fine too lol.
"According to Fresco"? Who do you think "Fresco" is? The "Fresno punche" which you copy/pasted into your previous post is a reference to Mac Foster, who was from Fresno, California. It's not a person called Fresco.
I only see, "The Triumph and Tragedy of Jerry Quarry" w the forward by Foreman as the only Quarry book. Definitely will get it and do like Quarry as a fighter. Ur description piques my interest, thanks.
Quarry did knock out Norton at the Main St Gym. That isnt a myth. Rick Farris who was there at the time, among others, have backed this up.
I dunno Solomon. I seem to recall a boxer named Al Fresco 0-100-0, - he participated exclusively in outdoor, open air events. Of course, there was also The Cisco Kid… Exit…stage right….
I thought I read somewhere years ago that the Ray Patterson KD was a mock up -accompanied by the photo of Sonny and Ray smiling. So, apparently, what I read is in no way correct? I’ve also just recently read the assertion on an old thread that Liston was not in fact knocked down by Marty Marshall in their rematch. Is that also correct? It’s true that many sparring stories abound and it’s very difficult to prove many, one way or the other. And of course, unless you’re Chuvalo or McCall, with all the rounds sparred, a KD here/there isn’t so unlikely or worthy of legitimate discredit or projection into an actual fight. Finally, there is much contention re Liston’s true age - so these stories of Liston being KD’d in the latter stages of his career, if perfectly true, might be indicative of a sudden, age onset, loss of his former resilience. Very interesting thread to say the least.
I think that Marshall dropped him. I know that few people beat Liston in sparring and those were Martin,Foster,Ray and that football player that beat Liston in amateurs. Martin was ex Liston sparring partner.
Did Mac Foster ever win anything approaching "a big fight"? I think I'd take Sonny to bludgeon him in 1970 in a slow and ugly mashup. Mac should probably win, but I'd bet against the faster horse for the tougher and more experienced one.
