I find it a testament how Pacquiao was able to overcome tribalism in boxing We all know it exist: we want people we culturally identify with to win. But Pac. A smiling gentleman from the Philippines made everyone , or almost everyone love him. It has happened before my time i am sure, but nobody did it like Pac!!! I think he was indeed a gentleman, always smiling, humble etc, that endeared him to people across the board. A rare thing now. Paul M points out the crazy tribalism in boxing. And it's true. I myself as a Scot Brit ITA mix I was rooting for the Hitman vs Pac. But when Pac won I wasn't mad about it because I was a fan. Question: why can some cross tribal lines? Being a KO artist like Tyson? Or just being diplomat
Part of it is that his tribe isn't too visible (especially in Britain) and they aren't terribly loud or obnoxious. A lot of times hate for a fighter is really hate for his fans. Some Pac fans in the English speaking world will be tribalists from the Philippines, but a lot will be non-tribalist fans who are more pleasant to deal with in general.
Youre so right. The Filipino I know are humble and the nicest people. Like Pac. That attitude should win the day
If you have no tribe in boxing its easy. I root for underdog warriors. From Pac to Duran to Kassim Ouma etc.
Excellent post & in fact Pacquiao is still dealing with it today, He doesn't show up to conventions or events to garner the crowd or to remind people of himself & his need for the constant push for his ego & exposure to remain around circling others so they have to speak highly of him, Even in his prime he was never talked about on the prime time talk shows or TV in general & that's when he was taking on the best opponents sometimes fighting up to 3 times a year while never taking any flings with retirements or avoidance of any fighter in that time consistently putting in big numbers without the big Media's help or endorsements either i might add, He never had to sell out & create phony character changes in order to drive people to view his fights while currently we have multiple LDBC/Race type channels trying their hardest to exclude & ignore him in order to force their narrative with the fighter their in love with, for example Personal Agenda driven channels like "FightHype" who have to constantly remind & or brainwash the general public especially the new generation into thinking someone is the "Best" & by establishing him to be the ultimate measuring stick by conveniently adding his "Name" into various daily videos throughout the long years in hopes to garner & influence people into believing he was or still is the best, Being Asian, Filipino to be exact means their isn't a whole army of American fighters bringing him up constantly either or name dropping him as even now in his already great status i have regularly seen people especially being American or even UK disrespect or undermine him, that's the reality.
I've never "culturally identified" with anyone I support or root for...that would be shallow and inane. I give no F's as long as they are exciting to watch or real G's (Character and skill) Filipino, British Pakistani, British Gypsum, Argentinian, American, Congolese, Nigerian, Mexican, Russian, Ukrainian, Eskimo, Chinese. You name it. I normally don't have a horse in the race so will root for the underdog especially when there is a hypejob trying to build off them
Pac ****ed every single public-woman in las vegas. Twice. In the meantime his wife and children were at home, waiting. I give you this kind of gentlemen for free, man, you can keep them all.
Nah, but he gained respect of the Latinos by fighting like them and beating the crap out of a lot of their heroes lol
He has grown man style, no earrings in his ears like wu-tang, a bunch of tattoos but not overboard, give him props for escaping a life full of poverty. He is there for the people, still there in the church even though he's famous. Never trashtalked or tried to. Gave complete submission to his trainers (Freddie Roach) never lived that thug lifestyle albeit he did gamble and have an entourage that did play billiards, drank, and played video games. His biggest allure is that he's the common man; able to walk the walk without having to talk about it. Every mistake, he's been there, cockfighting, calling gays gay, but he repented man and is just a solid dude. He's the fricking Michael Jordan of boxing. I could go on and on I might as well, he plays semi pro b-ball, and he Unites a room together only in ways that Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson could. All around good role model and ambassador for the sport of boxing. His legacy is intact, and I say these things out of respect. People would say we would miss iron Mike when he's gone, but just like iron Mike, he is our little but scarey friend in the ring!
