Roldan was extremely tough and could brawl. But I’ll still give Duran a chance at a decision. He took Marvin fifteen rounds and then years later beat a very tough middle in Barkley.
Roldan was trained by Lectoure and gave Hagler hell even with one eye. I dont think he can be so easily dismissed.
Oh it wouldn't be easy, it would be a rough physical fight that might go the distance. But in every engagement Duran would make Roldan miss and counter him. After about 8 rounds of taking that Roldans left eye would start looking bad.
Thanks Reinhardt. I stll say Duran was more formidable at lower weights. I'm still appalled that he lost to benitez when he beat leonard who is a much more complete fighter
Yeah ,the Benitez loss was a continuation of the funk Duran was in after the 1st Leonard fight. He quit in the 2nd fight, looked dull in tune ups, lost to Wilfred then to Kirkland Laing. He began to look finished as a top fighter, even Ray Arcel said he should retire. Then I remember a professional gambler , Billy Baxter who watched boxing closely advising to bet on Duran heavily in the Cuevas fight. He said watching Duran train he knew that he was back. I wasn't convinced at all! but after seeing him dispatch Pipino I saw it too. I bet big on him against Davey Moore, got 5-1 odds if I remember and it paid off big. I couldn't bet on him in the Hagler fight as I thought that was a bridge too far. I didn't bet on the Hearns fight either as I thought he'd lose by UD , of course no one foresaw that ko. Being a big Duran fan my friends asked if I'd bet on him against Barkley, I said Iran is wayyy to big can't see Duran beating him. Wrong! I was stunned the way he took the punishment from Iran and came back to win. He was one roller coaster ride after the victory in Montreal made him rich.
