Eusebio Pedroza's absolute MUGGING of Juan Laporte is the 1st fight that pops in my head. And LaPorte's continued telling the referee instead of handling the situation the way most great fighters would've was a great indication of him lacking the fire to be a great champ.
This content is protected The 11th round of the first Jose Napoles v Armando Muniz fight starts at 34:30 of this vid. About half way through the round Napoles starts targeting Muniz' nads. And he keeps firing without a word coming from the referee. It is so bad Muniz is actually using his hands to hold Napoles' arms from firing low and bending low at the waist to ward off the shots. Before the bell rings ending the round Muniz is actually lifting his leg to block the low blows and returns to his corner shaking his head while holding the twins. I once asked Muniz why he didn't retaliate and he said Napoles' referee was waiting for him to do so, so he could DQ him. Napoles was in a pathetic state, cut to ribbons and was really hurt at the end of the 10th. The fight was nearing a stoppage and this was just another dirty step to save Napoles title.
But tell me my friend was that any worse that Andre Ward blatantly lambasting Sergei Kovalevs testes continually while red Tony Weekes watched & just ignored it. At least the verdict was correct & Golota was DQ'd. Tony Weekes gave Ward a TKO win for the final 3 punch onslaught instead of DQ'ing him
A lot of Floyd haters down him for this, but I loved it! I would usually allow someone the first foul & foul back in retaliation after a second foul, but as nasty as that very obvious head butt to the mouth was, Ortiz deserved EXACTLY what he got - KTFO!
Great call. That IS a classic! The old 1 - 2 with a difference. The butt to (1) head and the punch to (2) nuts.
But didn’t Ortiz “apologise” for his infraction, offering repeated hugs- which actually set him up for Floyd to KO him? And, I never saw Floyd’s “in kind” apology. How rude.
I don’t know if it’s the worst, but this is definitely along the most blatant. I always said Coggi-Gonzalez 1 was the worst ref performance I’ve seen in terms of corruption. This is maybe the worst I’ve seen in terms of complete ineptitude This content is protected
I remember long ago, on ESPN a fight between a young up and comer and the target of the evening. The up and comer could miss, at least below the belt. Each punch got lower and the referee began by warning, taking one point, then two. Finally a punch that seemed an attempt to pick up the opponent wrestling style and the referee called the fight disqualifying the younger fighter. during the after fight interview the younger fighter acted as if the ref “had it in” for him and that he had never hit low. They didn’t interview the other fighter, I’ve often wondered why.
Roberto Duran’s very low blow v Ken Buchanan. It’s often mentioned. Obviously Duran is a great, but was a master of the dark arts. Although this was blatantly obvious.
