How Well Could Michael Spinks Do, Against Riddick Bowe?

Is this a competitive fight?
Spinks who beat Holmes, against Bowe who beat Holyfield?
Can Spinks herky Style give him problem s?
Would Bowe s advantage s over power the smaller man?
Not sure it matters but 15 rounds?

 

Spinks does a few rounds or so better than he did against Tyson.

I doubt he makes it past round 6, against Bowe.

 

It's a case of Bowe being just to big for him, mate?
I can certainly see that working against Spinks.

 

Spinks's elusive style could give Bowe some problems i think Bowe would have trouble finding him, but i tend to think eventually Bowe would catch up to Spinks and stop him in 6-8 rounds ? but again were judging this on if the stars are aligned for Bowe, and he brings out a rare peak performance.

 

I'd say it is a combination of factors. Me not really seeing Spinks as an authentic heavyweight, being one of them.

Sure, he squeaked past Holmes; then, was gifted the rematch to gain and retain the lineal championship, but he didn't really go on to prove himself against any of the top-flight contenders in their prime.

Also, Spinks was a boxer-puncher, who had typically enjoyed physical advantages and being able to apply intelligent pressure against his Light Heavyweight opponents. He wouldn't have anything like those luxuries against Bowe and he wasn't apt to be a stick-n-mover, who might force Bowe to cover some ground to reach him. Moreover, Spinks was a notoriously slow starter.

In '92, Bowe was at his offensive best and, with Spinks not being too difficult for him to find (IMO), he was likely going to be on Spinks from the opening bell and hurting him from the outset. It's really a matter of how long one believes Spinks could hold up against the type of assaults that Bowe would deliver.

I just can't see Spinks being able to withstand Bowe for long, albeit that he'd likely last a bit longer than he did against the most explosive version of Tyson.

The big over hand right of Bowe is the lethal weapon here imo.

 

Yep - it was a staple part of his armory, for sure. But Bowe had quite the array of weapons that he could call upon; mainly because he could throw meaningful punches at any range (Although, I always considered him to be most effective at close-to-mid-range).

In essence - At his best, Bowe was able to hurt you from just about anywhere.

 

Yes he could do that.
My actual feeling toward the fight is something similar to the Hide v Bowe scrap.
Perhaps Spinks managing to bounce a few shots off Bowe's big head, sort of giving Spinks early success.
But Bowe's heavyweight punches doing the real damage.
This is obviously prime Bowe, the one that got hammerd by Golota?, well that one really struggles to win imo.

Yes, that's a good way to look at it. Although, I don't think Bowe was as sharp, against Hide, as he had been in Holyfield I & II.

Regardless, Spinks was superior to Hide (save for power) and, without doubt, clever enough to land some promising shots on Bowe and perhaps even frustrate him momentarily.

Bowe of the Golota bouts makes it interesting, I'd say

Bowe could really fight for a big guy, when he was in shape and wanted to. I think Spinks may have caught Larry on the way out, still an accomplishment to pull it off though, and I'm still kind of shocked about those two fights.
I think Bowe is too big and strong for Spinks and he stops him.

 

Holyfield came to brawl, or could be quickly convinced to brawl. Bowe didn't have to go looking for him. Spinks was craftier and more selective on the attack, more imaginative. I see him giving Bowe problems over the first half with Bowe coming on to squeak out a Decision over the second half.

 

I would have to favor Bowe but I don’t think the outcome is a given. Spinks losing to Tyson so quickly had just as much to do with him NOT wanting to be in there as it did his being overmatched. Michael was a master boxer while Bowe was slower and had porous defense. Michaels right hand could do some damage as well, even at heavyweight. Again I’d favor Bowe but this is a better fight than people think

 

A total speculation, I know, but I don't believe Spinks would have wanted to be there, against any Heavyweight at the top of their game.
