I think a prime Chavez baits a fading De la Hoya into a TKO late in any fight they have. The first fight this was exactly this plan. Chavez was going take De la Hoya into deep waters and then drown him. JCC in the last round of their fight was getting through to Oscar. I wish it would have gone longer. JCC was a heavy hitter who's punches accumulated and broke people down. Highly accurate and relentless pressure wears Oscar out. JCC would take this one.
The big "if" in this match up is size; when Oscar fought at 130, he was at least 140 in the ring. The 130 pound version of Chavez was miles better than Oscar ever was, so was the version of Chavez that beat Rosario, and so was Chavez for a large part of his run at 140. Chavez was a real professional fighter while Oscar always fought like an amateur. Chavez beats him at 130 and 135. The version of Oscar that beat Gonzalez has the best chance of beating Chavez at 140.
I've always wondered about this too. Does any version of Chavez beat Oscar? Yes, he was past his prime when they fought, but he still has to deal with the same problems. Julio's game was cutting the ring off, getting you on the ropes, then pounding the body. The problem is Oscar hits a lot harder than Meldrick Taylor, he's big, and he had fast hands to boot. Would have been interesting to see if a younger Chavez solves this problem.
At 135lbs he stops Oscar late at 140lbs its very close but Chavez close decision Oscar often faded and Chavez never really did he'll win it down the stretch.
Gotta go with Chavez at LW by UD - Oscar had a sturdy chin and would not be KO'd. De La Hoya, judging from his fight with Hopkins, would certainly be uncomfortable with the body attack a prime JCC brings.
Yes most certainly. Chavez broke guys down to the body early and then the head. Oscar would have succes early but a younger Julio was a different type of guy. His determination and chin were all-time great elite level. Honestly Chavez is also more skilled. Oscar might try to just survive but he may not have the legs to "move away" after JCC's body assault. It could possibly comedown DelaHoya quitting on his stool in the later rounds.
There's different ways to quit. We've seen Oscar stop fighting to win a few times. Part of it was mental, the other part stamina related.
Chavez certainly could. @135lbs DelaHoya would be dead in the water against an elite pressure fighter like Julio.
